Hello to all at the forum. i was having a sit down adn think the other day and wondered why manufacturers dont seem to make 18" FULL RANGE loudspeaker cabinets. I understand the weight is a bit part of selling equipment but i dont care about that i want power rather than weight. DJs can gett from 10" - 15" full range and for the xtra low end some 18" bass bins or 15" BASS drivers but its an idea all the low end of the 18" bass bin in a full range cabinet.....dont you just droole at the thought. neways does anybody know of a manufacturer (not retailer - part from chris) who produce cabinets like i have waffled about and longed for, for so long.

You can get equal power handling from 15" Cabs. Take the Eminence Kilomax for example, a standard 15" Driver with 1000W Continuous RMS Power Handling and large Kapton voice Coil

The main problem with high power handling is the crossover / horn combination. Most high frequency horns are rated at around 80W - 120W RMS without a X-over (when used actively). X-overs tend to max out at around 600W RMS Power handling due to the heat losses required with the HF Power when reducing it to a safe level. For instance my Ohm RW series has 50W Power resistors strapped on to the crossover - and they get pretty hot at 350W - imagine the resistor size and heat produced from a speaker being fed with 1000W??.

Decent, Quality 18" speakers tend only to be found in ratings between 500 - 1000W RMS - whereas 15" ones are available in anything from 200W - 1000W ratings. In other words since 18" drivers start at 500W they are more commonly used in sub bass applications - purely because they don't want the problem of finiding a suitable horn / x-over combination to work at such a high power level.

Besides, don't believe the hype - an extra 3" is nothing flirt.gif . You can get just the same level of audio from a good quality pair of 15" speakers when amplified correctly, housed in decent quality cabs and EQ'ed properly. A good speaker is about its design parameters, cabinet design and size, and the equipment driving it - rather than solely the size of the driver.

oh rite so what your saying is chris size doesnt matter. I Have used the kilomax drivers before in a friends cabs and well they are fantastic. but u know how things are. this is what the forums all about. Cheers chris what sort of price could you do a pair or kilomax drivers for. thumbup.gif

The Eminence 15" Kilomax Pro is just as good, if not better than many lessor 18" drivers smile.gif . Again it all depends on the cabs and upstream audio quality as to how your speakers sound.

P.M sent to you with price information.
