The first place to look will be the playlists section. Depending on the crowd, they may want singalong stuff (not always cheese!), or modern, or simply a big mix...
My recent gig had mainly 20's, with a few 50yr olds. As they working in a shop - I didn't think they'd want too much christmas stuff (they've been hearing it every day for the last few weeks!).
I played christmas stuff as background, then kicked off with modern (Tik Tok ect) which got them up and dancing.
I did about 30mins of this, then dipped into some older (empty floor! lol), but persevered with a 2nd oldie and they came back singing along with some of the older colleagues.
Towards the end of the night, I went modern(ish) again, and was playing "Ruby","Chelsea Dagger" etc, and ended on "Don't Stop me Now". - so the last 20mins was most guests, arms around each other singing along and having a good time.
I did play "Fairytale of new york" mid-set (tricky working out when to play this!). But that went down well (my fav christmas song anyway!)
Now, my party will be different to your 2. If they are eating, then use this time to play a selection (I played everything from Ska to Smiths to Disco House), most of my guests were in a side room and couldn't hear the music unless they went to the bar.
If you don't have any background music (ie just disco only), then you'll need to consider the ages of your guests and make a judgement. Play some well known chart stuff at the start - not a big deal if people don't dance for the first 30mins.. and then test the waters with some older tracks, and then onto some classics (Jacksons etc).
By this time, you should have a better idea about what they like.
I hope this is of some help!
Post back in the "how was it for you" area when you've done the gig.
