Hi folks
Is it my imagination or are folks suddenly into severe cheese music. I get specific requests for lots of cheesey music when folks are filling in their details.
Also, the 80's revival seems to be still in full effect as I get more requests for 80's music than any other era or style.
Suits me fine as I'm of a certain age.

Yes, me too! I get requests in, either on the paper request slips, SMS, or verbally, and I CRINGE momentarily, but then usually smile inwardly, as I know a lot of the people attending the do will probably enjoy it.
If I play something "suspect" which I think might clear the floor, I announce "The 30 second rule"...eg: If less than X people are dancing to the tune in 30 seconds time, we'll ditch it, and move on... And I do...

Cheesy stuff eg the fast food song, cheeky song, asereje, cha cha slide, saturday night, macerena etc always pack the floor!!!

People asking for (so called) cheesy music?
I think it is a healthy sign that people are not taking themselves too seriously and are keyed up to going out to enjoy themselves. I think some of the current music takes itself too seriously and it's followers do likewise. Motown seems to be going through a strong revival too on my dancefloors

Howdy again
I'm glad it's not just my imagination then

Funny ain't it that the songs that most people wouldn't be seen dead listening to are the ones that most folks will dance to.
I'm not complaining, I wanna seen a dance floor totally stuffed with happy folks bopping away.
I think the recent upsurge in 80's music has a lot to do with the school disco dot com thing and the friends reunited phenomena, but it's only a theory.
These days I very rarely get requests for up-to-date stuff, and then it's the standards like Kylie, girls Aloud etc.
DJing is a pleasure to do at the moment.

Agree with you mate, they have certainly both cashed in on the cd front, school disco.com have released loads of stuff in a relatively short period of time.

I fully support Cheese!!
If after 20 years it is still popular and being requested then great!
Maybe in 10 years time the nouveau cheese will be MAARS and Technotronics, early 90's vintage stuff????

..maybe; only problem with this is that MARRS only tune (Pump up the volume) was released in 1987/88

Chicago House

yep, that was the business.
I was working in a basement club called Oxfords in Oxford St around 85/86 playing mainly soul/jazz-funk US imports and was one of the first dj's in London to start playing the Chicago House tunes.
My fave at the time was Marshall Jefferson-Move your body (The house music anthem), but JM Silk-Shadow of your love was a wicked tune as well.
It makes me laugh when some of these so-called "top-DJ's" who appear on these music documentaries say that no one was playing house in London in 85, what a load of crap

as apart from Oxfords, I knew other DJ's also playing some of the Chicago scene in other clubs around London at the time; long before it all blew up and started getting in the charts.

Ooh-err I'm having a 1987ish house flashback; it must have been all the ACIIIEEDD (only joking kids)

.
Joe Smooth - Promised Land, Mr Lee - Pump Up London, Raze, the song House Nation by someone or another (I'm not near my old vinyl at the moment so I can't check and I can't remember either), House Sounds Of Chicago Megamix 12" imports, dodgy house mixes on cassette from Camden Market..........Those indeed were the days.
!
I think I'll go and have a lie down.........
Regards to all

When I read that I just had to dig out the 12" of "Love cant turn around" (you forgot to mention Darryl Pandy)
There were some really good house tracks out around the middle 80's.

One of the late 80's tunes that I still like to chill out with is Raze - Break 4 Love, reminds me of my early D.J'ing days - then there was The Beloved - "the sun rising" which came out a few years later....Happy Days *Sigh*

Where would we be without the cheesy tracks, its an easy half hour, and almost guarunteed floor fillers if you pick the time right, if your lucky you can keep it going an hour.
Its very entertaining too, most gigs are family dos, we should remember that the majority of people like this stuff, we are there to ensure they have a good night, there are too many djs out there play what they like themselves and they forget the client!
We have so many clients say that they have bad experiences with DJs who play "thump thump" music as they call it all night and talk too much.
I blame the DJs for this not the clients, you should always play waht the client wants, with a bit of deviation of course, the majority of people do not want thump thump all night, if you want to play that type of music you should be in Ibiza
