Can any one help with a Numark CDN 88 disc skipping/repeating
Ive had this problem on the last 3 gigs and lost confidence in it.
It's only the left draw thats doing it, it seems to be when the bass is heavey.
I've tried using a lens cleaner but last night proved that this was not the problem.

It's definatly not a vibration problem as such, even though it has got a 48 sec anti shock, because the other draw works fine and my back up
dn 2000F MK 3 is sweet as well and that dont have anti shock.
Ive checked all mounting of the unit. Ive done a simulating test by tapping the side of the unit and yep it skips, But the other side doesn't nor does the Denon.

I purchased this unit in April 2002

Any sugestions or any one else had this problem?

Thanks

Tim.

Disc Cleaner are little more than gimmicks - you need to clean the CD Lens properly and physically. I remember a consumer "Which" report on these domestic cleaner kits and they found that 8 out of 10 of them didn't even make contact with the lens!.

More than likely it's a laser alignment problem, this makes the cd liable to skip for no reason or with the slightest vibration.

It's a job for a Numark dealer unfortunately, shouldn't cost more than £30 - £40 though.

Coould try as chris mentioned opening up the unit and getting to the laser eye and getting some isopropyl on a cotton ear bud and gently wiping it over the eys to clean and crud thats got on it!! usually works well

If that fails then yep looks like numark will have to look at it for ya!!

But then KAM cd players are better biggrin.gif ( JOKE FOR CHRIS)

Thanks for the tips fellas!
I went out a bought the most exspensive cd cleaner i could find, to find out that it doesnt ecen touch the lens! wallbash.gif

I tried the open it up and clean with cotton bud and stuff (i used the solution that came with the cd cleaner) and so far it has passed the in house lab test, BASH IT a few times.

Seems alot better than it was, Now both draws seen to skip about the same, not like the left side skipped when i farted! 363.gif

Thanks again

Thought that would help mate and yes that was the right stuff to use to clean them!!

I know quite a bit about lasers as i repair Xbox and Playstations as a side line business for the last 7 years biggrin.gif

Well hope that helps for a while anyway

Handy hint 845....

Most CD's that "jump" are not neccesarly the laser.

You will need, cotton buds, small scewdriver (or similar), light engineering oil ( I recommend singer sewing machine oil) and a very steady hand

Take the lid off the unit. On one side of each drawer assembly, normally the right hand side, you will see a "crome bar" the laser assembly "slides" up and down this bar. Carefully use a cotton bud to "clean" the bar, you will probably have to plug the unit in, load a CD and select track 17, this then gives you access to the other end of the bar. Once cleaned, put a very small drop of the L E Oil on the flat blade of the small screwdriver, and gentle smear it on the bar. Reload a CD and select the first and last tracks and switch between them, this moves the assembly backwards and forewards. Also, use a small amount on the cogged drive wheel and on the teeth under the drawer assembly.

DO NOT:
1) look directly into the laser whilst on.
2) get oil on the laser or it's assemby board
3) adjust the small "pot" on the assembly board

Failure to complie may cause blindness, due to your retener being burned out.

The cd cleaners (the discs with the tiny row of bristles on them) CAN help, in some instances...notably, the bristles whip up quite a breeze inside the unit and really do help dislodge dry dust, lint and the inevitable bits of fluff.

A few years buildup of adhered smoke machine and cigarette smoke residue is definately gonna take more than a good breeze to shift.

Luckily, 4 of my 6 CD decks will all accept the same user replacable drive, which swaps out in about 2 minutes, even while the other half of the cd deck is still playing. I just carry the one spare cd drive "just in case" any of the 4 units plays up.
