Def I'd go for the original mate, I've had the song requested as a first dance with a few reassurances required off the bride and groom I would actually play that version!!!

I've always gone with the original Lionel Richtea (the singing biscuit) and Diana Ross version.

I haven't heard the Mariah Carey/Luther Vandross version but, I would always suggest that, unless someone specifically requests the cover version, rather than the original of ANY covered song, go with the original. Of course, if the requestor looks too young to remember the original, then it doesnt hurt to confirm with them, especially in the case of love songs, which could be being requested by a couple to re-live some other time which they heard "their" song...If you use 4 precious minutes of play-time on "the WRONG version" scared.gif you've then got only a few lousy choices - waste time playing the "right" version (bad for everyone else at the disco), or explain(fib) that the version that you played, was the only version that you've got (cough!).

The same philosphy can be applied to mixes/remixes of dance tunes, most people will want the Radio Version, or an extended (looped) version of the radio version, not the "DJ dubheads super-duper clubby dubby almighty wick-dipped dub mix" (featuring 6 words from the original track, repeated through a filter, 30 times through an otherwise boring 5 minute abomination of the original track)

however there are occassions when the original was not a hit and the cover was, so you need to check which one,

examples

Outstanding - Gap Band/Kenny Thomas
Caravan Of Love - Isley Jasper Isley/Husemartins
Tender Love - Force MD's/Kenny Thomas

there are probably 100's more as well

Ian, I realise that you know Kenny Thomas so you're judgement may be a little biased. IMO The Gap Band original of Outstanding is exactly what the title states which is not the word I'd use to describe Kenny Thomas' version.
It's true that most people will know the Housemartins vastly inferior version of Caravan of Love but the original is such a fantastic tune, but then when it comes to originals the Isleys have done so many great songs that have then gone onto be better known by pop artists sad.gif
Such as: Shout, Twist & Shout, This Old Heart of Mine to name just a few.

no not biased, the Gap Band version is excellent, Kenny's Rubbish as is his version of Tender Love.

I was pointing out that there are times when the public will only know of the cover and not the original,

another example is Tainted Love, if we followed Gary's advice (not a crtitisism Gary just an observation) we should all play Gloria Jones version from 1968, when we all know that it's soft cell that they want.

just shows that there is no hard & fast rule, play whatever version you or your audience prefer

As much as I love Luther, he should of known better and styed well shot of Endless love.

Gap band 'Outstanding', tune!
Gary
I take it all back - replace my use of the word "original" with "most well known" or "most played on punters car radios".

However, the "ask the requestor" is always the best idea, especially when asked to play "The power of love" - theres at least 4 popular songs/versions of that...Huey Lewis and the news, Celine Dion, Jennifer rush, Frankie goes to Hollywood (original & jumped up trance version) etc, etc, etc. Although they're not all covers of the same song.

Oh dear! I love the gap band!
