HI MP3DJ,

Reading that post makes me..............

1) Glad I'm here

2) Glad I'm not there

3) There are Educationally Challanged people pretending to be DJ's.

Just to insert my own 2p worth...

Any DJ who can't afford to buy CD's shouldn't be a DJ. It's a business like any other and should be treated as such. How would you view a garage who couldn't afford to buy in the supplies of deisil or petrol, it beggers belief.

If any of the 13 year old Authors who contributed to the above post on the "other" forum, just happen to wonder onto this forum by accident, please don't sign up - go back, quickly to Teen-DJs-R-US and don't come back!.

These are no doubt the ones responsible for the 7PM panic calls from clients who have been let down at the last minute because (1) Mummy and Daddy wouldn't let their little D.J's attend, or (2) S-Club are playing at the local town hall.

I really feel physically sick to be sharing the industry with morons who can't string together a coherent and constructive post, and who's attitude clearly is so out of whack that they should be considering therapy let alone "advising" others. I am really concerned, MP3DJ, that you feel that this post would be welcome here! scared.gif do you really feel that

Is constructive & helpful advice??, if so, please shut the door behind you when you leave.

As I have stated in the other post, the risk of prosecution for using illegal material is increasing, and if the Trading Standards happen to kick down your door at 7AM there is very little that you can do about it. Increasingly landlords and venue owners are becoming legally liable for the material that their D.J's use, in other words, very soon landlords will be checking their D.J's CD collections, if there is any evidence of pirated material then you won't be allowed to set up and work. Do you really think that they will risk a big fine / prosecution / losing their entertainment licence just for you??.

I certainly wouldn't be taking legal advice from somebody with an alias of "FKDUP74" whose style of posting suggests that he's not to happy with the industry or sharing advice smile.gif . I suggest if you really still believe that it won't happen to you, then please read the post below, which was reported in a newspaper regarding a DJ who also thought that it wouldn't happen to him either!, the story covers Karaoke D.J's but the penalties and action taken is exactly the same for music cd's, its also more believeable because it's written by adults!.

As Darren pointed out, if you download purely because you can't afford CD's then you are not charging / out enough for your business to be viable. Would you steal a car if you couldn't afford petrol?.

Yes, no doubt that there are D.J's on this forum using pirated material, and I'm not standing judge and jury over them or questioning their professionalism as a D.J. However they are not daft enough to draw attention to the fact, or try and persuade others that there is no risk attached to it!.

Taken from a newspaper article....

KARAOKE DJs have been warned over CD piracy which could land them in jail.
The joint alert by Hartlepool Borough Council trading standards department and an industry watchdog comes as a local DJ has £5,000 worth of counterfeit CDs seized.

Gen Stenberg, of the Public Performance Music Partnership, which represents the DJ products industry believes such piracy is costing millions of pounds. He says fake karaoke video CDs and hit compilation CDs are widespread in pubs and clubs - and those caught with the illegal music could face up to 10 years in prison. The legal versions cost around £20 but counterfeit versions are only for a fraction of that price. "We are running a high profile programme targeting DJs who everybody knows are using knock-off equipment," he said. "It is estimated that 60 to 70 per cent of the karaoke products in the UK are counterfeits. "The quality is often very poor and the image breaks on screen, it gives a bad impression of the karaoke industry as it is often done by people who don't look after their equipment and may have unsafe speakers or lights."

Mr Stenberg says new legislation introduced last year means anyone using counterfeit CDs, or allowing their premises to be used for the CDs to be played, can be prosecuted. "Any equipment involved in the playing and recording of these items can be seized. "We have been into places that have computers rigged up to MTV to produce CDs that haven't even reached the record shops. "If somebody is trying to go straight and buy the CDs rather than copying them and try to make a bit of extra money by doing karaoke, they can be undercut by someone who has cut their costs right down by copying them.

"It is also hitting disco shops because they were once selling hundreds of these CDs and now they are only selling two or three." He added that the illegal trade was also stopping the music Industry investing in new talent due to falling profits and hitting the pockets of performers playing on the karaoke and compilation CDs. Michael Welsh, the council's head of trading standards, confirmed around 200 CDs had been seized from a Hartlepool DJ, who has not been named, and the department was considering a prosecution He said: "For a small place, Hartlepool has a large leisure industry therefore we must protect both national and local businesses and stamp out rogue traders.

Dont take this the rong ways but i think most people on here have tryed to think of every way under the sun to get round this sticky subject. What i've done is if im not sure i will buy the original simple as. No hassel nip in to HMV and they have most CD's and i beilve if they havent got it they will search for you. I no its an exspensive game but at the end of the day its ppl with copyed cds, ect who are going to lose out. Plus if they do randomly come to your gig and ask you about your cd's you havent got to worry all night about them turning up or even waste your energy running away biggrin.gif

Good point, but you never here about legal action being taken against D.J's using original CD's?. If you did that the DJ would cease to exist meaning less nightlife which equals less drinking, ultimately meaning less taxes and money for the Government smile.gif

this b****y anoys me 188.gif ,when i first started the guy who i bought my gear from told me that everybody did it wallbash.gif but after taking advise from a dj pal of mine i decided to start as i meant to go on.........LEGIT!.i dont have the best equipment in the world or the fullest diary, but i do have a wife who understands that all i earn from my gigs has to go on cd's and equipment,in short at the moment im doing it for love not money but rome wasnt built in a day.

i dont think for a moment that im the only one who is legit but it begs the question who hasnt got all the correct licenses or PAT or legal cd's and how could this be policed?

at least i can sleep soundly at night.

im not knocking anybody but to all the guys and girls who play by the rules.....GOOD ON YA!

Again, how many of these D.J's have also informed their favourite uncle at the Inland Revenue of their activities?.

Again once you get onto this subject it's never ending red tape, and although it won't make you a better D.J at least you can sleep at night!.

mp3dj... you can get the cha cha slide (and with several versions of it) from www.cdnow.com.... you can even listen to it on line to ensure you have the version you want.

Lets face it - how many of our normal punters really want a "Rare" mix of anything... they usually want to know the version heard on the radio.

Anyway, all it takes to get hold of "hard to get hold of" discs is to spend a little time on the internet.. there are literaly 1000s of cd stores both here and abroad, who will happily sell you discs... I use the above and even with import duty from the US, find they are extremely competitively priced. A little time and effort on our part will usually get the legal format that you want.

By the way... the "other" forum?..... Cowboys R Us by any chance.... and I wonder how many of them actually earn a single penny from dj-ing.... walter mitty alive and well eh!
