Hi all
I'm assuming all DJ's do the same and take a breather when the buffet starts at 18th, 21st etc. What music do you all play? A medley? a 40 minute mix?????
Just wondering.......

Depends totally on the party!!
a 21st I'd play a mix of early 2000's and 90's stuff
A wedding or 40th some swing maybe, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin etc with a mix of 70's and 80's.
All the above would be well known tracks but not the one's you'd be inclined to dance to

modern day music usually, and any of those requests that you know would kill a dancefloor!!
I usually have an idea on the audience by then so start collating the playlist for the next few hours.

I usually play easy listening back ground classics, But depends on the event. I have also played classical and Big band/rat pack. As with your main set you provide what suits the mood and crowd. Your still performing after all.

Well if its not a wedding I actually take advantage of the "nothing happening period"
This is where I ask the audiance who wants to win some cash and do a 10 question quiz for 50p a person.Allin all out to winning team.
I can complete this in 15-20 mins and the audience mark each others papers as different coloured pens are issued.
I also make a fun thing by asking the audience the answeres
Usually this breaks the ice and I only do this when requested by the client.

If I feel it's right I'll play something a bit different...Reggae, Country, Classical or 'proper' dance music - the Viennese Waltz almost always gets at least once couple dancing. I usually get most of my compliments and repeat bookings from this section of the night!
Just remembered I played Rammstein (Somme) at one gig! Imagine how happy that made the 'greb' couple who requested it! And before the disco police arrest me for playing a track that could have ruined everybody elses night, Somme is a great track that's not 'too heavy' (subjective, I know). I also played it at buffet volume.

I tend to go with mid to down tempo sing-a-long stuff.
I keep a playlist in the laptop, I have old Irish ballad stuff up to the most recent addition Laura Izibor "Shine"

If a playlist has been involved, I try to put some of the list on that I don't think will go down too well.
That way the client is happy that even undanceable tracks have been played.
Other than that I play a different selection depending on the type/age group of guests.

Let me turn this topic on its head. If it was your party - say, your 21st or 40th, what would you want the DJ to play during the buffet? What about if it was your wedding?

Whatever woudl suit the occasion. Although I do have Paul Anka - Rock Swings and Motown remixed which are a couple of cracking albums to put on when you want quality background music.
And, as someone mentioned before - those requests that woudl kill the dancefloor if played a little later on.

If it was my party I think I would be quite happy with whatever the DJ put on within reason.
The thing is I would rather that they played something that some of the guests want to hear, maybe foot tapping music or other songs that don't really have a place at a disco but are great to listen to.
