I'm after a few cheap lighting effects I can use in small pubs etc..... I have got 6 DMX lights but just too big and heavy for the smaller venues. I've been asked to do a pub in town after the new year so I'm looking for a few effects that are not in your face all the time and not too expensive. Any ideas??

Yes, moonflowers are definately the thing to go with for small venues.
They are inexpensive, effective, not too bright, not too big and heavy and can be angled to one spot so that they are not in your face.

Or you could try an illuminator from lytequest, a chameleon, - best to go have a look and see what you think is right for the pubs you are going to be doing.

you don't learn do you Trincas??. One day back after a suspension and your back up to your old tricks. You were given a 2nd chance, and blew it.

moonflowers are a good choice.
Also any Geni range of lights. I have the XTC and Wild Blaze. Brought them in 1998 and are still working well. Very nice lights, very sharp beams.

yeah ...
the Geni lights are real good
we recently purchased the XTC and Wild Blaze along with a stand, as part of a package deal.
Not too pricey and still a great effect, even in a small area, great for pubs/ small clubs.
take care for now

Thanx for the suggestions, thats given plenty of ideas. Incidently I too would like to know about the Genie Blaze effect. I believe it has different coloured gobos with a flat mirror which scans 180 degrees in time with the music is this correct?

I don't think it has gobos?
I thought it was just a coloured moonflower which is deflected by a sound activated mirror?
Ive done a bit of research on it and have made up a very quick page on the Geni Wild Blaze:
Geni Wild BlazeHope its of some use. lol

The patterns look very similar to the old Twister.
Loz can't just take a couple of your existing lights? When I do smaller venues I just take my moonflowers. I also have a source abyss, which isn't that bright but has a pretty water ripple effect and slowly changes colour. Use it to good effect to light the ceilling above a dance floor the other day. Several manufactures make their own versions.

I have an XTC and the wild blaze, both very good lights, nice and bright and strong caseing.
The geni blaze effect is abit like a vasto, but has a 250W bulb, the colour dish just rotates to the music.

I like the look of them, a couple would work well with my two xtc's I have already.

I would recomend Geni to anyone. Ther optics are very good. Very sharp beams on all lights they make.

Yipe, I have four GENI products in my setup so far and they are:
(These three were on special)
GENI Mojo Spin Master 1 (£69) and its DMX
Wild Blaze (£69) non DMX
XTC (£74) non DMX
FLA 075A Strobe (75w) with link plug (to allow remote flash rate control)
and well made and housed in a ally housing.
Having a look whats out there on the net there is some real rubbish such as
the above type of effets made from crappy tin plating, I forgot to mention the
items listed above are all made of ally, covers are steel for obvious reasons
and I think they're well made and work well. (I think they are Japanesse)

look at some NJD Chaos's and datamoons. they're fantastic for the price. i think you can get chaos' for under £100 and dtatmoons for about £150. We have two datamoons linked with a controller and they're excellent.

I am very impressed with "Abyss". water or fire effect, very subtle and versatile. you can also lock it to just 1 (of the4) colours. Not sound activated.

(Pubs in Norfolk don't expect much)

Hey
For small locations I use the NJD Datamoon, NJD Chaos 2 (Kal) and 2 Chauvet ZX5's. I know they are all mini moons but they cover small to medium areas nicely without causing the lights to wander and flash peoples eyes all night, thats what the laser is for

Joking
Mini-moons, and gobo throwers which are not scanners are probably your best bet here, specially seeing your going to be limited to a smallish area in a pub, also height will be a problem in pubs due to lowish ceilings.
Best Regards

Hmmm, the low ceilings bit is something that I can identify with. Most of the pubs in this town have very low ceilings, and date back to the original Coaching Inns of the 1700 and 1800's a period where I think the average persons height must have been around 5 foot

.
"Lighting" these venues for Discos has always been a nightmare since even a standard height Ultimax type stand is scraping the ceiling. At one particular venue we had to tilt the stand forwards to put on the goalpost lighting bar, since there wasn't enough clearance to lift it over, in the upright position

.
Fortunately, a few of the very small venues are now building modern extensions to the original buildings for use as a function room, but for many years it was scraped knuckles when setting up lighting.

maby you should have your lighing ojn top of a flight case aiming up towards the roof and use spot boxes to light the floor, then 1 datamoon or chamelion 3 will do it and 2 spot boxes (red, yellow, blue, green chasing) will light it adiquatly

lights on top of a flight case? Doesnt sound too safe - especially in a busy pub with lots of people consuming alcohol!!

should people be behind your decks at a buisy pub when theyre consuming alcahol?

No, but one thing you can't predict is people. I've known D.J's lose equipment when a mass brawl breaks out at a function, or a drunken conga collides with it, and people often don't keep an eye on their kids

. Risk assessment is all about planning for what can happen, rather than what hasn't happened so far!.
Balancing gear on flightcases or at floor level (Spilt drinks!) isn't a good idea. If you want a light curtain - go for Gary's idea, posted on another thread, and use halogen floodlights with colour gels and perhaps a dimmer / chaser combination - rather than balancing light effects. Halogen floodlights have toughened glass and are waterproofed - so rugged and more than ideal for this application. Even some stage lighting is carried out using the conventional K1 floodlights in Pro applications.
And yes, I've worked some pretty rough and unsavoury venues in the past, and those where gangs of fighting football teams were not uncommon!.

Hello there!
with reguards to the Geni XTC and Wild Blaze lights.
We own both these effects, in which we have purchased as part of a package.
In our opinion, great for small / medium sized venues, as they give off quite a bit of light, without being "in your face".
This combined with some sort of basic "light box" chase effect should do the job.
Hope this has helped

Hi, I just wanna thank everybody for all your replies, I have since had a better offer at another venue using their sound system and the lights are already fixed, so I'm sorted now.
cheers:
