yeh but the classic cuts series is expensive if you are going to collect them all.
kazzachi
Yes, but if you choose the ones that you will use most you dont have to buy them all! Even I couldnt afford them all! A little bit of everything is far better than tons of the same!

Mastermix CD's are good, but its a very expensive way to start D.J'ing and there are cheaper alternatives - a track is a track, no matter what CD it comes on! smile.gif provided it's by the original artist, and mastermix CD's are also around 30% dearer than other non DJ Compilations around.

Browse Ebay for the old Now series' to catch up on music from the last 15 years or so, and even the newer "hits" series - both of these will give you a fairly decent collection from as little as £3 - £5 a disc!.

Visit a few local record fairs and the many online CD Mail order outlets, you can get some pretty respectable 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's ,90's box sets from £19 - £35 containing the equivalent of collections from Mastermix costing twice as much!.

I bought a good 80's collection 6 months ago, for £29 from Time Life Music, who advertise on the satellite channels. It had all of the popular tracks which were on the Mastermix Box Set but with a lower price tag.

Mastermix is the Harrods of CD Shopping, which is fine if you have money to burn. But you can find the same material on other compilations, far cheaper online and even in the highstreet.

You need time and patience to root round these sites, but they got a good cheap selection, go digging!

I have Mastermix........................But I'm a millionaire.

But another good way is just to buy Now 50/51/52 etc. and markets (as long as they are originals and not pirated) Like Chris says a track is a track whether it comes off DJ Only CD1 or Wollys Smash Hits at £1.99 it will sound the same.

Why not pirated?

just a general question...

We are all aware that many D.J's use pirated material, but that is at their risk, and it IS an increasing risk due to the number of random "spot checks" currently being made, especially in clubs, pubs and council run venues get found with pirated material and you will face a fine and confiscation of your gear. However it is also considered a kick in the teeth for other D.J's who pay a lot of money every week for original disc's and usually such talk gets the poster flamed!.
kazzachi
Asda... a great selection of discs with compilations starting from £2.97 - yes! £2.97... spend a bit of time there and you wont go wrong!

This is a grey area, and a question which even the relevant Authority find difficult to address when asked the same question.

We are not here to judge people who may use MP3's, however whenever the subject appears on DJU it tends to get heated by discussion from both sides of the fence.

I know that many clubs are taking the step to ban D.J's who use MP3's from their venues (Due to the fact that the manager of the venue can also lose his entertainment licence & get prosecuted - as well as the D.J).

No but they will visit your address, to find out - usually by escorting you directly from the gig. We are talking licensing, FACT or Trading Standards officials here, who often have the same powers of warrant and entry as the police.

I would suggest that you take advice on this from the legal profession, since nobody on the forum is really qualified to answer this question and give a definitive answer.

If you do have original CD's for every back up that you use, either in CD or Mp3 format and can prove it, then they probably wouldn't persue it any further.

Just a note on this - there is only a couple of sites that allow you to download them and burn them legally.. MSN, iTunes and even Napster do not allow you to download/burn for playing to a crowd - they are purely for your own use.

DJintheMix.com allows you to, and so does track2burn.co.uk I think but I dont know as have never logged on there yet..... huh.gif

Just something else you need to be aware of... tongue.gif

i have wandered this same thing, weather tracks downloaded and burned are used at discos.

i have a strong sense and will to use only legit cds purchased at a store, but my parents are urging me to use mp3s aswell, to cut down on costs.

fair enough ... in the short term you will save costs, but in the long term, i dont want to have the risk of my equipment being confescated (along the lines of the posting related to equipment being stolen) and the rather hefty fine (as djs dont often earn a great deal of money).

so for the time being ... i will stick to legit cds.

take care...
