Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my mixer and amplifier in June 2004.

At the moment I have Gemini pmx 20 mixer and a old home use technics amp.

I used these last night at a 60th birthday party and they held up fine sound wise but I could do with a more powerfull amp that is fan cooled so it wont get hot like my current amp does. i also need a mixer with a mic input and an extra couple of channels.

At the moment I reley on my amp for my mic input.

I am considering buying the soundlab dj 10 4 channel mixer and the soundlab sp 500 or sp 800 amplifier.

I have 2x 300w skytec speakers but i have been told that they only give out 150w each and then the distortion starts to kick in.

Should i buy the sp 500 or 800.

I wouldnt' have to work the 800 as hard and I can give as much sound as I require out of the sp 800. Do you think that the sp 800 is more suitable to my setup.

Very Risky - turn up the mixer or play a track with a lot of bass and the peak output of an amplifier rated at 400 Watts is likely to do some very comprehensive damage to a 150W speaker.

Perhaps this post is a little premature, I am a main Soundlab Distributor and Soundlab Equipment comes and goes into the UK with no firm guarantee of availability. For instance we often have to wait 4 or 5 months for delivery of the Colourscan Kits once we sell out - it all comes from the Far East by boat so it takes ages, if it comes at all!.

So what i'm saying is that the DJ10 may not exist by June 2004 - let alone be in stock wallbash.gif.

Its the problem with a lot of non UK sourced goods - not knowing when or if the next shipment will arrive. This isn't a sales pitch - i'm just being honest when I say that I don't even know if there will be any more DJ10's after this batch have been sold, Soundlab UK do not have any more to send me at the moment and aren'
t givng a delivery date for new stock.

Maybe this question would be better asked here in May 2004 smile.gif

hi,

So, if I keep looking and basically getting ideas of what specificatoins i want, then save money until i have enough then go for the soundlab products that available at that time.

I am not saying that i would use the max volume on my 300w speakers but saying if I upgrade the spweakers the amp would b sufficient to give my power.

The sp 800 wont have to worka s hard as the sp 500 and wont be set to as such a high volume if you get me.

Saying this, which of the 2 amps do you think are the most suitable for my setup.

I am also looking at a soundlab dmx lighting kit for christmas 2004, I know its a year off but I am planning my dmx rig.

2 scanners (colourscans if available)
2 floorfillers ( dmx gobo moonflowers )(perhaps chauvet salsos or similar)
2 colour changers ( no info yet)
soundlab 6 or 4 channel dmx controller ( might be included with colourscans)

please answer both amp and mixer questions and the lightin questions.

smile.gif hello there

was just passing by and thought i could give you a little bit of advice.

i cant help you currently with the lighting question, but with reguards to the amplifiers.

it is indeed true that the load placed upon the 800 amp wll be less then that of the 500 amp, BUT they are 300 watt speakers, so 300 + 300 is 600 so the 500 amp is a decent sized amp to power those speakers.

if you kept those spekers and chose to drive them from the 800 amp, the amp would indeed be fine, but you would have no idea of the load on the speakers, as to how much more they could take, especial as the speakers highest point of tolerance would be relatively low down on the mixer fader, therefore it would be tempting to think that you have room to push the volume up a little more , but before you know it, the speakers would be no more.

hope this helps

take care for now

Hi,

so the 500w amp is suitable because even if i push it to the max it still wont over power the speakers.
