Just onto silent...Ive had the odd phone call from agents if they have been let down by somebody asking for any contact numbers I may have. Never use it unless I have to though...as has been said it looks pretty unprofessional as you are 'at work' at the end of the day!

I cant agree that a phone ringing looks unprofessional..... answering the phone does!
Dynamite Discos
mines always on vibrate so i can pop out and return any important calls at a suitable time. would never actuallyt answer it while behind the console tho - very bad image - altho perhaps i have been known to write a sly txt under the table when nobodys looking!
The Spindoctor
I agree with Kazz on this one, mine is always on ring, but then I use it only for business so if it rings its normally urgent! Having said that I use it for text requests so if it rings the punter knows I got the message if they see me answer it!

My mobile is on at all gigs, as I promote SMS requests.

Ive already got over 80 numbers that i will be txting on Christmas day with a "Merry Christmas from the DJ who entertained you and your colleagues at The "blah blah" venue a few days ago. If you need a Disco in 2004, call.01......
mikeee
I normally have mine on silent / vibrate (don't answer that), until I forgot on Wednesday, The boss stood and half way throu grace, my censored.gif phone went off.
kazzachi
Oh poor grace..... half way through and she is inturrupted by your phone... hope you apologised to her mikeee!
Gary
These "Grace" jokes remind me of the 60's song "Im feeling Glad all over"...i bet that was the best night that Glad has had in ages.

As far as mobiles at gigs go. You need to make sure that the mobile wont give interference to any of the audio, so somewhere on the record/cd table might be better than on the top of the mixer, amp, or crossovers.

Mobiles will normally make a "registration" once every 20~30 minutes, just to tell the network where they are, (short "DIT DAA DAA DIT DAA DAA DIT2") and a longer, noisier burst of above, over the top of an electric humming/buzzing noise when an incoming call is about to start making your phone ring/vibrate.

As mentioned in the Audio equipment reviews on the forum, the Numark TT200 will actually reverse direction several times in a few seconds, if a mobile starts ringing/takes a call whilst the mobile is near one particular corner/edge of the deck.

For instant suppression of the "dit daa daa dits" etc, you can place you finger on the mobile phones aerial (if external, or internal whereabouts known). This will reduce the interference, but your finger might glow for a few years, especially if your on Tmobile or Orange.

i always turn my phone off at a gig due to fear of audio interference.

part time i work as a technicien for sound + lighting at a charity theatre group.

we are lucky enough to own our own theatre building.

we have a special radio loop installed in order to pick up the signals of the radio mics better, so whenever somebody in the audience forgets to turn their phone off, if we are using radio mics for that show, we get a terrible beeping and buzzing sound coming threw the PA.

to eliminate this risk, i always turn my phone off around audio equipment.

anyway take care for now

I always turn it on to silent. Not as if anybody is going to hear it though.

It's a business line, so any calls I get on it are generally related to it in some way or another. That and for contacting me in an emergency.

Wouldn't want to miss out on a really good job cos you didnt answer the phone...would you??

If it's a potential client I just explain that I'm working at present (This works so much better if it's a song they like on at the time) and if it's ok with them I arrange to call them back in order to discuss their requirements in more detail.

People normally see this as a good thing particularly on a Friday or Saturday night.
Youv'e got to question a DJ that answers the phone on a Friday or Saturday night...in the hous!!!
