How many CD albums & singles do you own?Name a few which you think are "essentials".
If using a labtop:How many tracks (mp3s) have you got on your harddrives(s).
and at what quality(128k?)
which of these do you use most?
What software do you use?
If using vinyl:How many records do you own?

And some don't!!! (But I know where most things are)

I would guess that many DJ's have in excess of 15-20,000 songs available for a gig (CD and MP3).
However, of those 15-20,000 songs, only a small amount will be played, but the 'library' is there in case someone asks for that odd, old, classic or ancient track.
Even if you halved the amount to 10,000 - that's an incredible amount of music!
Some DJ's will have 3-6,000+ mp3's on the Laptop, but again, as mentioned before on other threads, you get 'doubling up' of tracks and album fillers, etc, that might, but never get played.
The 10,000 Track Question!
If we were to assume a typical industry standard record lasts 3.5 mins, then you're going to play 17 songs an hour, or 68 records over a 4 hour gig.
But life is not as clear-cut and scientific as that because every track is different in time-length and DJ's mix records, use patter, get interruptions etc, etc.
Even if we were to assume 140+ tracks were played over 4 hours - you still have the benefit of 9,860 tracks to choose from out of 10K!!!
Very Rough Guide:
2000 CD Albums is approximately 40,000 tracks (based on 20 tracks per disc)
2000 CD Singles is approximately 6,000 tracks (based on 3 tracks per disc)
'Caselogic' style 250 folder of albums is approx 5000 tracks!
'Caselogic' style 120 could hold around 2400+ of album tracks!!!
Using very rough figures, you can see that it's quite possible to carry around a lot of music, but as for vinyl - if we attempted to carry the equivalent in CD tunes - I think we would need a truck!

hi there ... i have been in the club style DJ buisnuise for quite some time (3-4 years) so i have built up quite a large collection of vinyls (last count was at 80 something vinyls).
as i am new to this mobile DJ stuff, i own no more than 20 CDs but i own quite a lot of "disco friendly" material on mp3.
take care for now

Ive got my old stuff on vinyl, but thankfully havent bought any vinyl for about 4 years, if not longer.
I've got a 200 CD flight case, + a soft flight bag of 30 x Christmas CD's, which I only carry at this time of year, and a caselogic case of about 30 other CD's.
The sad time comes to when you add up how many tracks you've got - I'd say for me, its about 25,000 including albums having about 10 tracks, double compilations having 32 tracks, singles having 2 tracks etc...times that figure by 4 minutes, and realise that you dont have enough time left

to listen to them all back-to-back.

We have six main cases, and weed them from time to time, the collection at home is growing though, six cases should be enough for anyone. Most
We check out the do we are at before hand and take any spoecific requests with us and perhaps a few that we havent played for a while just so that they dont feel neglected.
But in the main we have a most used boxe, and the majority of the night comes out of that.
We have a box of compilations, the cover your back stuff, bit of heavy metal, bit of ska, bit of reggae etc etc and all the loved up stuff.
A box of singles
Two boxes of artist albums
A box of DJ only stuff, like the NO1 collection , mastermix stuff etc
We use the No1 collection loads.
