Hiya,

Now the 2nd December (my birthday biggrin.gif !, anyway my xmas party season starts this Thursday 4th at a local hotel...

What I was wondering was...your plans for the evenings entertainment at your 'do's...

I have been resident at my current hotel for a few years and we have dinner dances for upto 120 people. Not a huge number but is nice within the function room I work. Last year I used to start around 9.30 kicking off with a game of Japanese bingo as an ice breaker with a bottle of champagne as the prize (not a bad hotel!). I have run this game for a couple of years now and as we have various companies at one event it seems to work well.

I then have the first half hour, function band the next 45, next half hour for me, function band next 45, then I round off the evening.

What are your plans...any tips/adivce would be appreciated that I could build into the evening

Regards

Steve

Working with a band, can be a topic in itself.

Definately get a play list of which tunes and what order, they're going to play them in. The last thing that you, the band, or the audience want is you playing a track, which the band were about to play.

Agree with the band which track will definately END each of their sets. Some bands love to do a false end..eg: "OK then, just one more"

Try to accompany the band with your lights, it keeps some continuity going for the audience. If you've got sound to light, and cant connect directly to an output on the bands gear, consider leaving your mic "open" so that your sound to light still runs during the bands performance.

Ever tried mixing into the bands final song? Its fun !

Maybe we should gatecrash a Live Music Forum, and see what their plans are for us D.J's!!! 221.gif , it goes without saying that I am still getting that "Poor little kid brother" attitude from Venue Staff and Organisers when I'm booked alongside a band 188.gif . They get the best of everything, Free Bar Tab etc and the D.J gets nothing but Abuse.

I will say that for the last few gigs the bands have been almost Human, although there was some very strong, sweet smells coming from the Dressing room of that Carribean Band the other week - methinks it wasn't Old Holborn being smoked in there scared.gif .

I used to have problems with bands, but I must say over the last 3-4 years I have had no problems at all, in fact one band even reccomend me to their clients and I get about 10 bookings ayear from them.

after speaking to the bands I work with, they find DJ's to be as difficult as DJ's find them.

their biggest complaints seem to be (as pointed out by Gary) that even if they give a set list the dj will still play songs they are about to perform.

normally from the clients perspective, they are paying a lot more for the band then the DJ, so they will need centre stage, so if you fave a small amount of space don't worry just accept it. After all we are there for one reason that is to entertain the client & their guests, not to try & score "points" over the other entertainers on the show.

so remember

Be professional
Steve
Sorry seems to be a bit of confusion in this thread!

I work with this band all through the year, and many other ones aswell...they are our resident band so working with them isnt really the advice I was after! sorry!

I just wondered what additional items you build into the evening apart from the music...anybody bother with a quick music quiz? tv themes quiz, etc?

Simply everyone gets a standard bingo ticket and takes to their feet...when a number is called that is on they card they sit down...last person still standing wins the free bottle. Nice quick game which for some reason everybody gets excited when they receive their bingo card!

Any other ideas

Many thanks

Just for my two pennyworth... if you are accommodating and professional with bands they will respond the same. I have never had a problem working with a band.... because I treat it like that - I am working with them !

Christmas dinner dances have gotta be the easiest of gigs... very rarely play for more than two hours so dont have the time to start games or anything... after the punters have been sitting their wining and dining since 7.30/8.00 they are usually more than ready to hit the dance floor!

I would challenge any DJ on here to set up in the 2ft square space which I was left, the last time I played alongside a band, which happened to be in Stoke. Unless of course you think that inflatable 60 watt speakers would work well in a room with 600 Guests Ian?? smile.gif .

Professionalism works both ways, and I actually ask the client to ask the band to send me an email or list of their format and playlist through the post to avoid conflict - needless to say the majority don't bother, but I find that most bands actively go out of the way to pi** off the D.J.

We are not talking Ego's here - we are talking common sense, and there is a difference! and any band who is aware of, and thinks that a D.J can set up a P.A & Lighting rig for 600 people in a space the size of an average Kitchen Cupboard, has either got a screw loose, or simply doesn't give a damn!. When politely requested to make more room, their reply of "Thats life Geezer" before wondering off to the bar, giggling like 6 year olds, certainly assured me of their professionalism.

It all depends on the audience, if most people are out to dance then I wouldn't kill it by doing a quiz, on the other hand if you were working a pub with limited or no dancefloor then you could benefit from doing something like this - although you have to be careful that you don't turn it into a local radio roadshow tongue.gif . If you see an opportunity where it would work then go for it, all audiences and functions are different, and what may not work at the last function may work well at your next!.

In other words if you have only played alongside helpful and considerate bands, then you are either very lucky or their agent smile.gif . Cowboy and Selfish, Ego driven band members are as common as their D.J'ing equivalents, and if they are out to make it difficult for you then nothing you can say or do will change that - however polite you are to them!.

To get them warmed up and into the party spirit after the meal I start with a sing song. The room I'm in is quite long and we set up in the middle with about 75 people to each side so I make one side Santas team & the other Rudolphs then get them to sing alternately. For instance last week I used Stevie Wonders 'I just called to say I love you' (well it mentions Christmas), got them all to hold their mobile phones and sing to the people at the other end of the room when I called out their team. This usually takes place whilst the tables are being cleared of the final course when they don't want people dancing and knocking plates etc out of the waitresses hands. Then it's lights out and into 3 hours of great music biggrin.gif

On Saturday they were still clearing at the end of the 1st song so a quick change in the player to some Irish stuff (it's a long way to Tipperary etc) and the singing continued. This could work in other areas of the country using local favourites or Christmas songs (Jingle Bells etc).

Im with crispy with the band thing... If I know I am working with a band I always speak to them before the event.. if possible I ask if they want to use my sound system, and if they do, great. If not, I ask them about how much room they need, how many band members etc etc etc.....Its all down to communication!

When I work my local hotel all through Christmas, because it is different companies every night I always do a Christmas Quiz between main course and the cheese and biscuits, keeps everybody sitting down out of the waitresses way and encourages the boss's table to take on the cleaners etc, radio mic loads of banter and geeing up, by 9.30 they are ready to dance through till 12. Home by 1 lovely!

Chris,

Do you use the time sync on your computer, I set up my computer at 11am and tell it to start playing at 19:50:00, then turn up at the venue at 9.30pm ready to go !!. I know it is not very professional but the hotel don't mind, and I can do another early evening gig too !
Chrispy
Little point for me Andy - my gigs are all at different venues, many of which I have to travel a distance to get to, so I often set up, then remain with the gear until the end of the night.

Mind you, it is certainly being trusting not only leaving a P.A system set up and "live" whilst unattended, but also leaving a handy laptop lying around a venue scared.gif.

Around here, if you dropped unconscious in the street you'd get mugged!

Hey Crispy, if you ever get another "idiot" band who wont budge an inch... when they go to the bar...... set up IN FRONT of their system and then tell them "thats life geezers!" 071.gif

lol nice 1 kazz this 1 time a band actually left me with no room what so ever and would not move not even when the hotel told them to so i ended up on a table behind the guests and could not set up any lights w censored.gif ers

Not a problem, i use the numark cd mix, put it on a scissor stand , long leads to the speakers or ask the band if you can go through their PA. problem solved.

if you went to a band forum, they would probably be discussing how difficult DJ's are, there are 2 sides to every debate.

If the band are being extremly difficult, calmly speak to the client & expalin the problems that you are experiancing, and if they could suggest a solution, as soon as they speak to the band, they all of a sudden find some room, all sorted without confrontation
Dukesy
I agree Ian!

Have had bad experiences with both bands and djs so i am staying out of this discussion.

An additional sing song type idea which I have used in the past is to get everyone to get a coin out of their pockets (or purse .. you never know?!) and start tapping it (gently) against a glass....

Keep them doing it for a while (you can take the mickey or get on the radio mike and ensure they are all doing it...) and then go into the tap tap tap digging section of Heigh ho.... tongue.gif

Then for the next 2 minutes people are roaring the Heigh Ho Heigh Ho it's off to work we go etc etc etc... rolleyes.gif

Just something that usually works..
Tonsk
Well

Bumpin this back up to the top as I need some help... beer.gif

I have done the singing with Heigh Ho, I tried I Just Called To Say, I even tried Gary's advice on a different thread and listed to what people were saying - trying to get some gossip etc...

But it doesnt seem to be working as well as planned. sad.gif

Does anyone have any other Xmas party ideas which can be used for multiple companies or just one?

Dont get me wrong, the nights have been alright, but I just want to make them better.... huh.gif I hate thinking I haven't done the best I can so..

Thanks all - Anything you can suggest would be very helpful! notworthy.gif
kazzachi
it all depends on how "up for it" they are.... Remember there are 101 things you can do with a balloon.... so you could try giving each table a balloon and seeing which one keeps it in the air longest whilst remaining in their seats! (making them use only their party blowers to keep the balloon air borne is quite funny - but extremely noisy!)

Andy, how do you set up a computer to start playing as you suggest ?, I am usualy around , but there are times when this could be handy, I use a Kensington lock on the Laptop even when dissapearing to the lounge for half an hour during the buffet (depending on the location and venue laugh.gif ) as Chris mentioned there are places i wouldnt let any thing out of my sight ! box.gif laugh.gif
