In the last year or so i have found a new love for funky house, but the only problem is that i now nothing about it! Growing up i was a pure DnB head and loved the rave scene, but now as i am a bit older my taste buds have changed and i would like to give the house scene a go. i perfer mixing house music i feel it more than DnB if that make sense, any way my problem is that i know no one in the scene, and i want to get started on my dj career, so what i am asking is where do i go for help and advice on playing out, who would be the people to contact about wanting to get started in this scene. if you can help then great if not then thanks anyway. wallbash.gif

Depends on where you live and how big the funky house scene is in your area.
I presume you don't have club experience? if not then it will be difficult to get a break as the main dj in any club unless you either know someone or happen to be in the right place at the right time, i.e. a little luck.
Alternatively you can try and get a warm-up spot for another dj at a club playing the sort of stuff you're into. You could either approach the main dj there and chat with him or ask the club manager about doing a warm-up set. Doing this kind of apprenticeship will prove to a manager your ability and also your reliability which is often just as important. Then you may get your break when the main dj(s) are sick, on holiday, leave etc.
You can also try to establish a reputation in your area by playing private parties/house parties and so get yourself known as a good dj for those into the same scene.
DJ Kray will probably be along later to give you some good advice for funky house clubs.

Yep Pab81 you need to let us know where you are in the world (or in relation to another thread which planet biggrin.gif )

Changing your favourite musical genre is not uncommon I go through these stages every so often - sometimes several times a day laugh.gif Yesterday it was Now 56 & Now Dance 2004 today it's Stevie Wonder & Barry White.

There's lots to read on here that may help and keep posting with any questions you may have.

One way is to get numbers or e-mail addresses for funky house promoters (either by looking on fliers or going to there nights) and asking them for an address to send your demo's to. If you mixing is good enough and there decent people you may have a chance of getting a set. Other than that you could try putting on your own night. If your the promoter then you will definately ge to play!

Hi Pab81 im glad to hear you have turned from the dark side to funky house. biggrin.gif good comercial labels to watch out for is subliminal and its sister labels also defected herdly ever releases a dud and if you get hold of the defected in the house colections on vinyl it will give ya a nice back colection as well as the head kandi cds which are all unmixed so great for mixing with also head kandi run house nights up and down the country they are normally great night so you should get yourself to 1 also ministry of sound in london run a defected and a soul hevan night again both are great but before i go on about great nights you will have to tell me what area you are from.

As for getting a spot in a club all i can do is agree with what eskie said above but with funky house and record buying in genral i would suggest you buy little and often visiting you local record shop at least twice a week this will help make sure you build up a nice collection of tunes.

I hope this helps for starters just let me know if you need anymore advice. biggrin.gif
