The laptops that have been seen on the net as overheating, are probably ones that had dodgy batteries in them. Theres pics of a dell laptop that caught fire, due to the battery in it.
A friend has a Mac book pro, where the battery bulged, a pic of it ended up on the pages of BBC news..

To be honest, the "burning batteries/laptop" was a manufacturing fault which could happen to Mobile Phones/Camcorder/Handheld devices or anything with a similar battery in it. Most of these batteries use similar cells, just repackaged to the application.
Most laptops have cooling vents at the base, with slim rubber feet. In a normal office/desktop environment, this should be adequate.
However, if your DJ set-up is to place the laptop on a carpeted surface, you'll see problems.
I've seen some laptop stands for DJ's - these should be ideal - lifting the laptop up, leaving any bottom vents open.
Running a laptop cooler will also help *lots* with forced air cooling on the underside of the laptop.
You'll hear the laptop fan coming on far less (providing the cooler isn't too noisy!)
I've used laptops for working on industrial robots and other machines - one job was in a very humid area (used to set bathroom sinks) - temp was about 35degC all day, and very humid though the water evaporating. The laptop wasn't mission critical - I was using it as a notepad and calculator.
In the 4 months I was there, the "cheapo" Dell I was using held up very well - far better than me :-(
I opted to use a PC over a laptop, as I use my Laptop for many different things, and didn't want all the other apps on the same PC I use as for DJing. Overheating was never a consideration.
