hi Peeps.
I've been asked to do a wedding in wigan and they are appearantly crazy about northen soul. I suggested they get a northern soul specialist but they want my cheesy shirts and dad-dancing and need a big show, so.

Any suggestions please !!!! I've got load of NS on disc but rarely play any tbh and dont know whats popular in wigen at the moment. Help ,,, Please !
Love & Light to all.

I'm sure there is a thread with the top 100 NS tracks, have a look at that.
I would also ask the client for a list of their favourite tracks too, NS is big around Wigan for the obvious reasons. I expect people will make requests on the night too. Don't forget though that there will be other guests there too so NS may only need to be played for 30 minutes to an hour.
You may also ask "rictic" for some advice as he is deeply into NS.

Wigan was the home of the famous Casino of course.

I have a book called "The Northern Soul Top 500" by Kev Roberts. Something like that could be useful.

You probably know already that Goldmine publish lots of Northern material but their website might be useful.

Cheers spinner.
I'll have a look for their website. The venue Orwell is ON the pier itself and mentioned in a song ? and thats why they picked it, so im thinking " fanaticals" they just put "any northern soul , it's up to you " on the gig sheet, so fat use that was !
I dispair sometimes, why bother to ask them ranting.gif

Don't get confused with the Pier and the Casino.
The Casino was on Library Street before it got burnt down. They have just finished developing Library Street, it's a huge shopping mall now.
Wigan Pier (nightspot) is the nightclub at the Pier itself and is still open. The Orwell is on the oposite side of the canal from the nightclub, it has all been developed into a national heritage centre.
Is the gig at the Orwell?

I love a bit of Northern but don't forget Wigan casino has been shut for 25 years which is a generation. I've done gigs and the punter has said "oohhh I love a bit of northern soul" so have put Frank Wilson on, probably the most famous song of all time and they haven't known what it is.

To be honest if you want a bit of inspiration then have a look at the tracklisting for this CD:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Northern-Soul...0395&sr=1-5

All the tracks on that one are certainly old enough to have been played at the Casino.
Reverandfunk
A lot of stuff on there isnt actually what I'd term Northern Soul but in my opinion, but you could say they are the floor fillers. Pick up a copy off ebay for about 4 quid and you're away!

keep the faith

TOPIC MOVED TO MUSIC AREA

Wigan Casino was on Station Rd wigan and was shut down by wmbc to extend the civic centre but it was a grade 2 listed building so it couldnt be demolished and cought fire a while later the civic centre was never extended. go to a few venues and look at the record reaction differant areas have there own favorite records one record may be a floorfiller in stoke but kills it at wigan i would ask the bride and groom to do a request list I work at lots of northern soul events and the differance from one area to another can be vast.
I hope this helps...
Have a good night KTF
My Freind does a northern soul show lots of info there and event lists

yep, try to get a plylist if possible. far too many different floor fillers / killers from area to area.
wigan was famous for quirky sounds which got short thrift at the more purist venues.
some of the torch and wheel stuff is superb.
as is the mecca stuff.
but a lot of tosh among the gems as well.

avoid gary lewis and the like. wigans chosen few should read spew

loads of donkey songs there BM.

go for the playlist and reply to my 2nd p.m.

Some nice stuff there Dave but id question Ellie Warren as northern soul it was associated with the fun pubs like Clowns show bar ect Edwin was fantastic i worked with him several times how about

Dean Parrish .Im On My Way
Guy Darrel . Ive Been Hurt
Tobi Legend .Time will pass you by
Most Contour tracks but not Do You Love Me
Tony Clark .Lanslide
Ramsey Lewis .Wade in Water
Tommy Hunt . Loving On The Losing Side
Night Owl .Bobby Parris
I worked with Dean Parrish last Saturday in Bolton he was Fantastic
id talk to the B&G and get a better idea
I hope its a good one
djdave1976
Hi Big Mac,

It's funny you should say that about Ellie Warren because i had the same views.

Did a Silver Wedding Anniversary last week and once again she was brought up by the customer as Northern Soul.

But I suppose it is what ever makes them happy
Reverandfunk
A few on the list are definately not Northern Soul, see we can't even agree as to what is and what isn't lol

I would ask the B & G for 10 songs (half hour) and add in some of the tracks already mentioned. For me a good half dozen would be

The snake - Al wilson
Dobie Gray - Out on the floor
Frank Wilson - Do I love you
Chris Clark - Somethings wrong
MVP's - Turning my heartbeat up
Chuck Wood - 7 days is too long

These are what I would call commercial Northern although Pete is a god so best listening to him lol

he he he loving it what differnce of opinions already. thats what music is all about.

the prior post was a bit motowny to be called pure northern

how deep do they want to go is the real questio as some music we regars as norther soul is considered played out by many people .

also can they still dance to the likes of landslidelol that'd kill me now i'd need oxygen.

check out

ray agee - i'm losing again fantastic mid tempo slider.

jimmy radcliffe - long after tonight is all over

doby gray - out on the floor

eddie holland / isley bros - aint enough love

flirtations - little darlin'

spooky - various artists

the mylestones - the joker

terry callier - look at me now

judy street - what

i could go on for ever.

i'll come along and do your northern soul set for beer and a lift lol.
