If i use CD mixing software, which automatically does the BPM and has "beatlock" functions, does this make me less of a dj?

or shud i continue practise with my numark cd mix 2

I would answer that for 'music storage', a MP3 player or Laptop is excellent.
I don't think it makes you less of a 'DJ' or entertainer, but instead, 'enhances' your presentation.
You can find and locate a track far quicker thru software in most requests - as long as the requested song is on your system!
Creating 'virtual' CD cases of particular genre's and music styles is also excellent for quick access to popular tunes.

If you are considering saving space in your equipment - yes, a digital medium is brilliant.
But for peace of mind, I would sugggest carrying a fair, broad selection of CD's and decks for 'back-up'.

Computers, from time to time, are prone to being a little pain in the neck when they need re-starting.
Putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak, is being a little over confident if your laptop or MP3 player 'crashed' and you have no other means of 'reliable' and proven hardware.

There are DJ's that carry 2 laptops or flightcased PC's to help avoid this potential problem, but a spare CD deck or two is as easy, if not easier to utilise.

It does makes you a less techcally as good dj because you are not doing it all yourself but this does not mean you will not be able to please a crowd as good as a dj who can beat mix. i would advise you to learn.

This almost sounds like peer pressure - eg: Your mates telling you that using "Automix" makes you less of a DJ etc.

As far as the average crowd of punters goes:

A) They wouldnt notice

B) If they did notice that you'd just clicked on "Automix" they really wouldnt mind, so long as the music selection was right for the audience.

I would rather be a guest at a gig where the right tunes were played, yet no attempt was made to do any mixing of those tunes, rather than have the wrong music all night, but beautifully mixed intro> breakdown> intro> breakdown> intro> breakdown> all night (after 4 weeks practice)
