I seem to be having troubles with microphone cables for my Shure SM58.

I started having troubles at christmas with my SM58 keep letting me down during gigs and thinking it may be the cable I went to Maplins to buy a new cable. This seemed to solve the problem for a couple of months and then it started happening again.

By now I was convinced that the microphone must be faulty, so brought a new SM58 and new cable. This was fine for two gigs and then let me down again.

I was now convinced that the mixer was the problem and this evening decided to set up my spare mixer with the new SM58 and cable. Unfortunately the problem was still there.

I have now dug out a very old microphone cable connected it up and everything now seems fine (working on both mixers).

I am using a 1/4 inch jack into the mixer to a three pin (female) connection into the SM58 and have noticed that the connections of the faulty leads into the Mic all seem quite loose.

Can anyone recommend me a good quality lead to use with a Shure SM58 or advise me whether Shure recommend a particular lead to go with this mic?

cheap cables i have used and still use on a regular basis are Stagg cables

They seem well made for the money and as i use them week in week out for karaoke i know mine have been reliable too

You are going from balanced to unbalanced which is no real issue...just need a good cable to short some XLR pins (probably already done) but if your connectors are loose then that is not good.

Use Musiflex cable and Neutrik connectors.

I had this problem about 10 years ago also with a Sure Mic. I like you changed the lead and it was even worse. I'm not a techy but does the length of the cable make any difference?

Yep.

Neutrik plugs are a must if you use XLR's for a livelihood.

As for VDC, well, nice, and other quality flex is available...

Length of cable matter? Nope.

Unless your running 100 metres or some similar long length, then you will need a good mic. amp.

It's only 10 metre cable that i have been using so i don't think it's he cable length that's a problem.

Think I will order a selection of better cables and go from there.

Thanks for your advice chaps.

piranha cables are the way my friend been using the same 3 cables for karaoke for 4 years + now, bullet proof as they say....

Dave - unless I missed something, you haven't actually decribed what went wrong with your microphone.

Did it cut out completely, or just start to get a bit crackly? Those 1/4 inch chrome-plated jacks are not good for yery small signals - wipe a bit of contact cleaner around it using tissue, as this will help remove grease build ups and some corrosion products which may be causing some problems.
