My friend has just brought a pair of the MAckie SRM 450's, i do not know much about Mackies as i only use Peavey and JBL - so what is the verdict on the Mackie SRM 450's, my friend has paid £750 for the pair including bags from Sound Control in Birmingham, but i am concerned with the old thing, what if the amp inside them pack up, at least with a seperate Amp you could always have a mess about to get the gig finished.

Are there any other speakers i should be looking at on the market that can deliver like these?

I've used the SRM 450's for 2 years now, and they are excellent for small to medium venues.

The sound quality is very good and they are now cheaper. £750 with the Mackie bags is a bargin.

I've had no problems with mine.You need to make sure they are vented, but that means that there simply needs to be some space around ie don't shove them up against a wall.

But if your running off a single amp and it goes pear shaped that you up the creek aint it......no amp, no sound at all.

At least if your running two powered speakers and ONE of the amps has a problem you can just about survive till the end of the gig on one speaker.

Iam about to purchase two SRM450s and two 1501 Subs.......added backup coz if the amp in one goes I still have the other 3 to make do with till the end of the gig.
Thats my way of looking at it.

And I know quiet a few DJs that have been running 450s for a long time with no problems, I think all the horror storys about being able to grill bacon on the back of the cabs are all myths to be honest.

You are right. It wasn't bacon.......it was sausages LOL

Fingers crossed my replaced pair from Soundcontrol have been spot on. Its hard to say really how warm/hot the heatsink gets. I check mine every 20/30 minutes or so. After 3/4 hours the heatsinks are quite hot BUT not anywhere near George Forman temps!!!

Now these are working properly. they sound fantastic - a real "pro" sound AND hardly get any feedback at Karaoke time. Soundcontrol were excellent with the aftersales to.

I run 2 x 450s and work on this principle that if one goes i still have the other.
THey get warm, yes, but i always give them space and never let them clip. I've had no problems so far.

Indeed it is, i sold my sub as i rarely used it but now with a rival Mackie system in the area i must buy some more!

The 450s are brilliant, never failed and sound so good when eq'd right!

i couldnt quite afford the mackies so i bought the 15" behringers. they sound pretty good too. i am now unsure as to get mackies when i can afford them or stick with these and add bass bins. although they sound v nice as is and dont seem so harsh as the mackies. but as earlier stated maybe if they aren't eq'd right they will sound harsh and toppy

My Mackie are bob on also. Never had any problems. Also don`t forget each Mackie cab is Bi-amped.

I maybe selling mine soon. "2 srm450`s and the 2 1501 subs, both in bags. The srm450`s are in original Mackie bags...

All 4 units in EXCELLENT condition. Poles inbetween also.

Only reason for sale is am looking at changing to Martin Blackline ...

How do you mean Bi-amped?
As in it has TWO amplifiers in each cab?
But is one for the HF Horns and one for the main driver?
Or do both amps power the whole thing, so both would have to go before it stopped working?

Sorry if that seems like a dunce question, but Im not really into the technical side of sound systems.

What kinda price are you gonna be looking at getting for your Mackie Setup?

No myth as far as I know - with earlier editions, at least. I was a guest at a record label winter party in 2003 where a pair of these units were on dry hire in a toasty warm function room, and each side took it in turn to go into thermal protection ... the hire company wasn't on hand to sort it & no-one seemed to take responsibility, so I suggested opening the windows and there I was, regularly manually fanning the heatsinks to get them going again!

However, reckon that must have been rectified, as lots of people here have them and don't seem to have overheating woes.

2 amps in the cab. There is an amp for the high frequency and another amp for the low frequency. The thermal problem was due to the low frequency amp being over driven as its a 12" driver (I`ve been told). If you use a sub or 2 with the cross over the low frequency isn`t driven as hard hence no thermal cut out problems. I have never had thermal cut out on my Mackies. I have never peaked them either..

As with the cost of mine? Am open to sensible offers at this stage.

Another Mackie user here. I'm fairly happy with them, but find the 450's lack "thump" when not used with a sub/s. Add a sub or two and you've got more than enough headroom for most gigs.
