Ok gang

Just picked up a change of plan off an agent for saturday as he knows I have speaker problems so he has switched my job to a 70th Birthday party as the kits gonna already be setup for a party the night before.

So whats your advice for the music, coz 70ths are not really my thing!

How would you guys and gals tackle plans for the night?

I'm doing a golden wedding on Sat so I would expect them to be 70 odd. I'll play a mix to suit the crowd, there will be their kids and grand kids there as well I would expect. I would guess they will like a bit of rock and roll and some 60's as well. I'd just tell them when you get there that you will be playing a mix to keep all guests happy and what do they really like.

It does very much depend on the age range of the guests. One I done, there was a very mixed age range as it was about 50% family and 50% friends so music covered all genres including a bit of sequence dancing. Kept the more modern stuff towards the end as the older guests left earlier.

Another one I done was predominately friends of the same age group and all I played all night was mainly sequence with a bit of 60's and slow tracks like Lady in Red.

Like most functions, you probably won't know what to play until you get there. They could be a bunch of ravers into heavy rock.

Im ok with most things......

Just a bit unsure of what 70 year olds might like, so some pointers towards this area would be a big help.

Cheers

At 70 year old they would have been post war teenagers.
There is another thread with some suggestions of CDs that contain a good variety of music from then.
I think if you search for "swing" it will turn up.

My mum was 70 last year and there were people from all age groups there, surprisingly few 70+ though.

Wouldnt a 70 year old have been born in 1938?

Teenager early to mid 50's

Cheers guys, I will have a look at those albums.

I always think that when doing partys for the older generation, its nice to get um dancing to the things that got them going when teenagers.....kinda try and make them feel young again LOL

So Im probably looking at 50-60s for this kind of agegroup......maybe some 40s but Im really struggling on popular music from the 40s......but Im sure those albums will give me some inspiration.

I will also take a trip into town tomorow, see if I can pick up those CDs from anywhere, coz the party is on Saturday so its a bit late to be getting anything mailorder.

Cheers for the tips :)

As they would be 20 in 1958, they are the rock'n'roll generation.

Classic r'n'r, a bit of swing & then 60's onwards. It will probably be a family affair anyway, so break out the cheese. tongue.gif All ages like jive & the twist.

One track I have had good results with over all age ranges is Nat King Cole - Route 66.

i did a couple of 70th parties last year.

Usually the guests are close family & friends. I would play plenty of 1960's and some 70's. Some Elvis numbers and late 50'd rock n roll as well.

Treat it like a normal family party.

Personally, i would get the punters name off the agent before hand to clarify preferences. I think NRG you have stumbled upon ther main problem working for agents - a lack of communication.

Probably the best bit of advice.

Although the birthday person would probably have been interested in the music of the 50s, don't forget that age is against them and they will probably be happiest sitting down yapping - don't expect too much dancing from this age group. (Although that's not written in stone.)

you are not too old for a clip around the ear young nik ! rolleyes.gif I wouldnt get too worried about looking for stuff from 60 years ago but would try some rat pack stuff and all light poppy stuff from all eras. Failing that contact dj trev who makes even me look like a spring chicken !
