Hi Guys/Girls
Following on form my Studio 54 thread - thanks to all contributors got a brilliant insight and tracks listed that i had never heard of!
My new thread is What is the Best 70's/80's Disco Track - in you're opinion?
Got to say i have to pick from either - Oddysey - Inside Out or Native New Yorker
SO i would be interested in other DJ's choices
Thanks

The one I play the most is Michael jackson - Billie Jean.
However my personal choice would be Donna Summer - I feel love, Giorgio Moroder was has always been a favourite of mine
Andy Westcott

I agree - Giorgio was highly influential during that time and was little short of a musical genius. 'From here To Eternity' is one that sticks in my mind.
As for my favourite disco track, it has to be one of these:
'Contact' by Edwin Starr
'Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet' by Gonzalez
hamilton bohannon - lets start the dance , kool n the gang - ladies night or commodores - brick house

I disagree. He WAS a musical genius
Oops, sorry to go off topic

EDIT:
Damn afterthought, couldn't resist.
I have the soundtrack to the 1978 movie "Midnight Express" done by Giorgio of course, and I am dying to persuade someone to use the "Loves Theme" from that as the bridal entrance music to a long church aisle. I just think it look/sound brill if they paced their step in time to the music.
Pause for thought. . . ooohhh Midnight Express
Now THAT was a sobering film if ever there was one

What is the Best 70's/80's Disco Track
Do you mean "Disco" as a genre of music, or do you mean any tracks playable at a disco.
e.g. Bon Jovi - Living on a prayer (1986) or Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 (1984) would qualify on dates, are immensely popular when played, but neither could be classified as "Disco"

Hot Shot - Karen Young
Shame - Evelyn 'Champagne' King
Running away - Roy Ayers Ubiquity
Dance with you - Carrie Lucas

Those who read the last thread will know how hard it is for me to pick a top 50, so a best one is very hard.

I'm a bit with Norfolk DJ on this one, although I would add Supernature as one I am familiar with.
However, my point in relation to the above is this.
I've noticed in many threads DJs seem to be looking for the "unusual" and unplayed songs. I've never quite understood this obsession but see it as a means of the DJ simply relieving HIS boredom with playing the same songs time after time. But to do that is surely a dis-service to the client.
Most people, myself included, find music to be staging post in life. We hear music from different years and relate it to events in our lives when it was current. Its that light that flashes on in our heads which says "Oh I remember this" and it brings back, hopefully happy, memories.
What, therefore, is the point in playing obscure or little heard of songs, which people do not remember other than trying to be self-satisfying? The fact that a DJ has all these in his toolbox and personally enjoys them has little bearing on the people he is supposed to be entertaining.
Remember, the client/guests have not heard the same songs as frequently as you do but what they enjoy most is those little triggers that spark off memories of good times and happy occasions.
Have you ever wondered that these songs remain obscure for a particular reason? i.e. they were never that popular in the first place.
EDIT:
Addendum
Hot Shot - Karen Young - never charted
Shame - Evelyn 'Champagne' King - highest pos 39 in 1978
Running away - Roy Ayers Ubiquity - never charted
Dance with you - Carrie Lucas - highest pos 40 in 1978
Supernature - Cerrone - highest pos 8 in 1978

Ah, but I didn't say I played any of the above records at discos. I just said they were my favourites. In fact I just checked and the only one I've played at a party in the last 2 years was Supernature and that was a request.
Actually, it depends where you come from and the 'scene' you were involved in at the time, because all of the above tracks are known to be classic disco tracks of their time. Whether they were in the chart is irrelevant.
I do a retro night on a Thursday at a club, and some of the above tracks have been played there, but not all.
I've said it before, I play what my clients want to hear, not what I want.
Hope this clarifies my position

Steady on James! My response was not a criticism of your DJing or music selection, but simply that I hadn't heard of some of these tracks. In fact, I did well by the sounds of it. Nothing better in my opinion than playing some tracks that don't chart or were a minor eg The Whispers - Rock Steady, a minor hit in 1987 but very popular and was requested a couple of weeks ago.

I'm with Wizard's choice too. Donna Summer - I feel Love.
Moroder's album 'From Here to Eternity' (by today's standards, ancient, but justified) is worth a listen after a pint or two! His innovative 1977 offering puts the 'altered states of consciousness' albums of the early 1990's in a tame light! (IMHO)
