We often talk about the stuff we buy for our discos but how often do we buy stuff that's from the 50s?

I've just bought 3 lots of 50s stuff that I know I won't get chance to play too often, but they are just way too good for me not to buy...just in case!

So what are they?

Bill Haley - From Western Swing to R-O-C-K (4CD set covering the years 1948 - 1956)

Gene Vincent - Gene Vincent Rocks and The Blue Caps Roll (1958) ? / A Gene Vincent Record Date (1958)

Don Lang - Introducing the Hand Jive & Singles Compilation (covering the years 1955 - 1961)

What made me buy them?

Simple. Memories of the stuff my Dad had when I was growing up. Been searching for them for ages and chuffed that I've found them. So if anyone needs a bit of classic 50s stuff, I'd hope they book me so that I can unleash these cracking songs on the guests!

Is there anyone else who looks for stuff that we know we may not use too often, but can just add something extra at the right time?

And if so, what sort of stuff do you go out looking for?

just bought a mavericks cd called covers which i might use about once a year me thinks, am always buying things just in case !

Yes, a sign of a good function DJ is the ability to be able to respond to any audience. Some of my best buys have been 50's and 60's albums or some decent background music. People appreciate the extra effort you make.

I got a Bill Haley CD a couple of months ago.
Played 2 tracks on Saturday night for the brides father, he and the bride danced to both tracks.

I have to confess whenever we are in a supermarket I can't resist a rummage through the bargains. You never know what you might find.

Ditto i cant go into any shop where there is cds without having a look

always looking for that something different or forgotten classic

p.s. my wife refuses to go shopping with me because i spend too much
time looking at cds while her shoe collection goes out of fashion by the second

just picked up a 'Big Band' cd for £1. Plenty of useful background tracks on there for dinner dances.

...and I thought looking at CDS and buying dozens - until I have 4500+ was my secret illness nobody else would understand...java script:emoticon(':dan+ju:', 'smid_22')

It doesn't stop there

I'm a music fiend. I had a huge collection before I started as a DJ and I'm even worse now. The old guilt about "should I really buy this?" is easing because I can tell myself "I need it for work", even though most of the time I know I'll never use anything of it at a gig. Buy an 8-disc box set that only has about 12 tracks I don't have (most of which are rubbish)? Certainly.

I also love searching the bargain bins and charity shops for stuff I've never heard of, or have totally forgotten about. I really need to get a life!!!!

The 50's is my favourite era of music., even though it isn't the era I grew up in!! If I have a mixed crowd I always throw in loads of 50's stuff and it goes down really well. My rock n roll collection is massive. I have every track by Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis etc etc. I often play "At The Hop" by Danny and the Juniors, "Im Ready" Fats Domino, "Say Mama" by Gene Vincent etc.

I would love to do a 50's disco so I had the chance to play my favourites tracks like Boyd Bennet's "My Boy Flatop", Frankie Lymon's "Thumb, Thumb" and loads of rockabilly. I also love all the pre rock and roll stuff from artists like Joe Turner, Clyde McPhatter, Chuck Willis, Amos Milburn, Louis Jordan. I could go on and on. I love it all but I doubt I'll ever have the chance to play it though. It's a shame really coz it's great music to dance to!

Have you played Ritchie Valens "Come On, Let's Go" at a gig?
It went down a storm on saturday at our gig.

I sure have got it! The original take of "C'mon Everybody" you mean? I have it on the Eddie Cochran cd box set as well as on vinyl too. Great track.

The Ritchie track is great too. I have played it but not often. There are so many great rockin tracks by all these guys.

Is funny reading this, cos I just recently picked up a 2 disc Rock and Roll collection in my local Dunnes Stores. Has a great selection of classic Rock and Roll and Rockabilly and cost about 8 euro..about a Fiver to you boys across the water

Just sitting listening to some of the Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Gerry Lee Lewis and others I realised what classic tunes a lot of these songs are..a lot of them still sound fresh today. Not sure I'll be able to say that about a lot of chart stuff these days in 50 years time.

Of course, there would have been a lot of dross released then as now...and usually only the cream of the crop will still be getting played 50 years down the road.
