I mentioned a little while back that I was planning to move full time at some point this year.

Never quite happens as you expect it does it! The plan was to keep doing the 9 - 5 until there was enough work to make the jump. Without going into any detail (as it's not relevant), it seems that after Monday I will have no choice but to push as hard as I can with the business.

This year is looking OK, but not near enough to pay the mortgage.

Before I go any further, can I just say a huge thanks to Tony (Tonsk), Norfolk DJ and Mo for there help with work so far, things would be looking a lot more difficult without them.

The reason for the post is to just ask any local (Norfolk / Suffolk or Essex) DJ's who may have work they could pass on - mainly mid week and Fridays I guess - then please think of me. There are some Saturdays free as well, so Saturday gigs are also a possibility.

Off to see a business advisor on Monday, so hopefully I'm doing the right things and the cross promotion with the Chocolate Fountain and Painting with light is paying some dividends.

Just want to make things look a little more secure!

Thanks guys. It's all a little big and scary right now and I guess I'm just not quite sure of the right direction. I have a feeling I might need a little day job just to keep me going for a bit.

Todays job is to see if I can transform my cat and van into one duel purpose vehicle! Thinking maybe a pick up, or much newer van with comfy seats that I can use for geberal use...

It seems to me that somebody who has just become a Father, doesn't have a whole lot else to be scared about! , compared to all of those 4am feeds ahead of you, this should be a breeze. But seriously, sometimes the fear of change is a lot worse than the actual change itself, we do become comfortable in our surroundings and cocooned within familiariality and we do like to keep a hold on, and in control of the way in which our future is heading. But then when those changes and decisions are made for us, thats when the fear kicks in, and really its just fear of the unknown rather than the fear of going it alone. My advice would be perhaps to find some other employment which is part time until you find your feet, this way you are still keeping some security of employment whilst working part time will give you more time to spend on growing your business to the point where you feel more confident that you can rely on it to give you a comfortable living.

Working full time is not always easy and you get the rough with the smooth, however it is far more rewarding and you will enjoy the benefits of the effort which you put in, something which isn't always true with working for somebody else. Despite the hard work it entails, many people who have made the decision have never looked back and I am sure that in time, you'll think exactly the same . But i do think that anybody who has ever been in that position will identify with the way that you feel at the moment.

I wish you all the best for the future Matt, and you're doing it at the right age, rather than waiting till your old like me and then wishing you'd tried it when you were younger.

Having said that, I've been fully self employed 3 times between the age of 20 and 40, and gone bust 3 times (mainly because I'm useless at managing my finances), but I still wouldn't change the past.

When you get to my age you often look back and think, "I wonder what would have happened if I'd done that", so go for it now while you're still young.

Echo that.

How so many of us put up with a lifetime of jobs we dislike and envy those who are able to work in something they really enjoy. And honestly, money really isn't everything. So, you may have to make a few adjustments in lifestyle, but what the hell. Do you really need those five weeks sun in the Seychelles, the Mediterranean cruise and the 3 weeks skiing in St Moritz?
