Yet another question which plagues my mind.

Firstly we have established that DJ Gear over here is way overpriced. Second, I am not flush with cash, rather an aspiring DJ, on a students budget! Much to some of your disgust I am thinking about attempting to build my own speakers. That way, I can do it in smaller segments, rather that one burst of cash. However, an interesting thought entered my mind. That was this…

In order to power these new beauty speakers I am going to build, I will need an amp. Planner of building a system (as Chris suggested) of around 600-1000W. I need to know a little about the different brands of amps and about how much I can pick them up for over here. And, if anyone knows a good place to do so!
From what I’ve seen so far, the amp will be the cost of all the other components combined!

Cheers

My recommendation would be the Peavey PV2600 amp. 900watts a side @4ohms, 2 build in crossovers, built in amp protection including clip limiters, Very robust and reliable amp with 5 year warranty. selling for around £480.

Here is something a friend suggested, now I know there is a reason, but I have no idea what!!... Whats the difference between a big beafy car amp, and the hi-fi ones typically used by DJ's ?? Also, are there differences between car speakers too?

Cheers

Oh Dear wallbash.gif , please, please tell me that this is a Joke! wacko.gif .

Okay, lets just assume that you a serious for 1 fleeting minute.

Why don't D.J's use Car Amps?? - Well the most obvious is power, Car Amplifiers operate from Automotive Electrical Systems which are (1) DC and (2) 12 Volts - Hook up your Car Amp directly to your local (220V? AC) supply and bonfire night will arrive early you'll even get free fireworks!.

So the power option?, either carry around 20 fully charged Car Batteries to every gig, or invest in a Power Convertor which will convert your 220V AC Mains to a Smooth 12V DC suitable for powering a Car Amplifier. Such a convertor will exist, however the output would have to be at around 30 - 40A making it very expensive so expect to pay well beyond $2000. It will also be the size of a small suitcase and weigh around 25kg.

And as for Car Speakers......don't EVEN get me started 188.gif ,

I think that its' now obvious that Plinth is here on a wind up, I can't believe anybody, however new to the industry is this naive - My advice, fit a powerful car system, reverse up to the venue, open all the doors and so.....instant Mobile Disco.

I have actually seen this done!!! It was an outside event and his lights were fitted into the boot. Packing up time 30 seconds - maybe we should all go down this route.

Well there are "newbies" and then there is "The Plinth" 071.gif - sorry I don't mean to poke fun at you, but some of your questions had us thinking "Time waster", "Timewaster" and this thread sort of clinched that rumour smile.gif .

If you are serious about starting out, then you have to do it properly or not at all, and to be honest the question above is the Equivalent of starting a Taxi Service when you only have a bike! or chopping off your head to solve a low ceiling problem.

All in all its quite amusing, but questions like that which defy logic is likely to make people stop taking your other questions seriously and you may have found your posts getting fewer and fewer replies.

Yes, we are out to help, and no we don't ridicule people new to the business, but you do have to have a bit of common sense if you wish to be taken seriously.

And if you friend put you up to asking this question, then both you and him deserve a slap over the head with a wet haddock fish.gif fish.gif
