I do believe there have been DJ meet-ups in the SW, as for 'shows', I can't see why there shouldn't be to serve interests if there is demand.

Thanks for the fast responce Dukesy
I am only in contact with the d.js in one town (3 of us) but with Plymouth & the rest of Devon & Cornwall on the doorstep i would like to think it would be worthwhile
I would like to see a d.j show myself after all i have been in the business for 20 years.
There must have been a starting point with someone up North????
Hopefully someone will see this & start the ball rolling

The reason there is no show is that no-one has organised one.
The NADJ may have a meeting in this area soon (although in the Northern Glous/Somerset part as this is wher there are keen members hoping to start a branch), although it won't be a a fully blown show, the sky is the limit if there's enough interest.

Tell you moore - you can't spell
There is / was a rumour a few months ago that someone (commercial) was looking at putting a show together that would be within 20 mins of the M5 / M4. Looking at a map, Yeovil might be a good place. It's finding somewhere that is easy to get to for visitors and exhibitors a like.
If the rumours are true, I think late next year would be the earliest, if not 2010.

Oh yes Dorset would be great for me! I would be interested in attending if it was local as I really don't seem to be able to get to events miles away. Always seem to be working!

We have had a couple of DJ meets between Exeter and Plymouth, and also a couple in Plymouth (these have been when Chris Shepherd CS has been back to the UK).
We will try to arrange another get together in the near future, but findng a suitable place that is accessible to all may be difficult. If you reply with some interest with your location, perhaps we can find a reasonably central area to suit all.

Nice one could you keep me posted on this, would love to meet other d.js & between Exeter & Plymouth would be fine for me
Judging by the amount of responces to this question there does seem to be a call for this in the South West

Anything is possible (except perhaps expecting Soul'ja Boy to release a follow-up single, which doesn't sound identical to their first

)
Here's a question, based on the idea that "from little acorns, mighty oaks grow"...
If you saw a mini- "DJ Show South West" advertised, which 10 manufacturers/retailers/DJ services would you really want to see there and what would be the maximum time/distance which you would be prepared to travel to the mini-show IF all 10 of your listed "Favs" were in attendance ?

Knowing my luck, the d.j show would be on a Fri & Sat evening!!!!!
As for distance/ time Plymouth or Exeter would be perfect locations i am also thinking of our cornish neighbour's
Do you know by any chance which d.j show currently running is the closest to the south west ( say from Bristol downwards)
I would like to see it held somewhere central to Devon, Cornwall, Dorset & Somerset but i am sure on Dartmoor would not be possible

Unlikely, It would likely be on a Sunday or midweek.

Why not, There are a few places around the Okehampton/Sourton Cross area that would suit many with good links from Exeter (40mins), Plymouth (50mins), Cornwall via A30 (Bodmin about 35mins) and North Devon (45mins).
I live in Plymouth, but work between Okehampton and Holsworthy.

It would seem to me that Taunton is probably the best place, although obviously I would prefer Yeovil as it's closer to me.

a dj show would be nice, going off topic slightly considering the amount of dj's and other entertainers in yellow pages ect there are very few equipment retailers in this part of the world because sometimes you need to demo it before buying.

For a massive DJ equipment exhibition, such as the South West would like to see, could be held at Westpoint, Exeter. Or just pop along to South West Sound And Light.
Don't know if you'd get anybody along there though, the only people remotely resembling DJs are me, Westy, The Bray and 'Arris in Devon.

Maybe for the moment try to get more than 3 along to a meet-up...

totally off topic, we were once the largest fairground in the south west of england. based in plymouth (plympton) until our yard got burnt down by the suffragettes in 1913 i think it was.
there was a book written about us last year, hancocks of the west by stephen smith from the university of sheffield.
there is still a phrase today in cornwall " done up like a sophie hancock" after my flambouyant ancestor.
my cousin in currently vice chairman of the showmans guild and visits that way a lot as it is where we are all from.
me - bristol
dad - taunton
rest of 'em west country thru thru and thru.
exeter , plymouth etc.
just found this re the soiuth west and plymouth.
Sophie Hancock
One of number of prominent women Bioscope pioneers
Throughout the 1890s and early 1900s the firm of W.C. & S. Hancock dominated Britain's West Country fairground scene - not solely because of the size of their enormous collection of rides and shows, but also due to the flamboyant characters who ran the firm - William, Charles and their older sister Sophie; who was particulary well remembered, long after her death, for her outrageous hats, booming voice, and colourful, 'indigo' use of the English language. Verbal accounts suggest that the firm was persuaded to enter the cinema-show business by one of their in-laws, Richard Dooner (1870-1951), who was the lion-tamer working on their menagerie show. His father, James Dooner, an ex-shadowgraph artiste, had given brief demonstrations of a cinematograph apparatus in Bristol. (In the early 1900s the Dooners would move to South Wales and tour the 'Dooner's Electrograph' Bioscope show, prior to opening a small but prosperous chain of cinemas. In 1934 Richard Dooner became President of the National Cinematograph Exhibitiors Association). The first recorded sightings of a Hancock shown incorporating film occured during the 1898 season, when they travelled a joint exhibition entitled 'Edison's Electric Biograph and Japanese Entertainment'. By 1900 the original combined show had been replaced by a more ornate, purpose built 'walk-up' booth - the 'Bio-Tableau'. In 1906 - the start of the golden age of the Bioscope show - the 'Bio-Tableau' was modified to form a double-entrance centre-organ show, 'Hancock's Electric Palace of Varieties'. The Hancocks continued to reign supreme until 1913 when the firm's entire, uninsured, collection of rides and shows was inadvertently razed to the ground in Devonport, following an arson attack by local suffragettes on an adjacent woodyard. The fire was also recorded on film by a locally-based Pathé cameraman, and brief footage still survives. Despite the setting up of a nationwide relief fund by the showman's paper The World's Fair, the firm never recovered. Charles died in 1916, William in 1918 - and Sophie in 1926, in a park in London. (Other notable contemporaries of Sophie Hancock include the nonagenarian operator Elizabeth Crecraft ('Crecraft's Wild Beast and Living Pictures') of the West Midlands and South Wales, and Annie Holland ('Holland 's Palace of Light') of the N & W Midlands).
the demise of our family taken from the family tree.
james murphy knows our lot and my dad know james' family too. he had business with my uncle john harrison in bognor, i remember bognor lol, and littlehampton.

That's what I asked, a few posts ago, before the thread so off-course, I had to click the heels of my Ruby Slippers together three times and recite "There's No Place Like Home"... to get back...

So...(echo)... (to be fair, a few of you have mentioned that you would rather not travel all that far..., but what sort of milage would you consider doing IF there was interesting product on display at the show? 3 miles? 5 miles? 12 minutes each way tops...?)

Good luck guys, little acorns and all that.
We still have to chase exhibitors every year and it's our fourth one this year! It doesn't get any easier (or cheaper), we almost self sufficient now, money wise but its taken the last four years. get some good seminars as well, it's something we've never done but done right can be very worthwhile.
We let everyone exhibit for free on our first year and the door cost almost covered the venue cost (just remember to ask them how much power they need)....
