I hate Amy Winehouse with a passion, I wouldnt ever play her at a disco....well unless it was requested then they would have to ask two or three times before I played it.....

Now......I was having a bit of a nightmare yesterday, doing a 60th, I was playing all the usual suspects for floorfillers from Motown to rock and roll to 80's 90's and some modern stuff, you named it I tried it, and it just wasnt working too well.

Well at one point I had about 7 on the floor and was thinking ok, what do I do now.....its just not happening.......
Got asked for Amy Winehouse - Valerie........and I thought well why not, nothing to loose.....

Put it on, turned my back on the floor to go in the CD box, turned round and the floor was packed with around 30 poeple!!! scared.gif
I was like "HOW DID THAT HAPPEN!!!!!"

So im converted, I want to play it again at a gig....
But what would be your suggestions for what to play with it if you was doing a set with it in?

Reverandfunk
I aint got any time for Winohouse but valerie is defo a floorfiller, I had to play it twice on saturday, the first time i went into Hot Stuff by Craig David the second time I cant remember lol

Scissors Sisters would work i think

I have a feeling it was "I dont feel like dancing" that I played next, and it nearly cleared the floor!

I will check what it was that I played next and see what it was LOL

I gotta hold my hands up as well. I hate Winehouse and have slagged her off elsewhere on DJU. I also said for a long time that I would only play the Zutons' version of Valerie. But I've had to give in and it does go down well. I followed it on Saturday with About You Now - Sugababes. Seemed to work OK.

Yes its certainly one of her best tracks and gets numerous requests and nearly always a floor filler

It is a very good song to get people dancing there is quite a few new stuff that just everyone likes!
old people are very fussy you put some good oldies on and someone always complains!
another good one is I dont feel like dancing by the scissor sisters which someone mentioned before this is a guaranteed floorfiller!

Yeah Valerie seems to go down well with a mix of ages. I also followed it with the Sugababes "About You Now".

I can imagine "You can't hurry love...the Supremes" working well too.

Certain modern tracks appeal to all generations. Another one that falls into that category is "Candyman" by Christina Aguilera. On saturday night I followed that with a real oldie "Boogie Woogie Boy" from Bette Midler and managed to please both the young and old at the same time!! Not sure the young ones realised it was such a golden oldie coz it had the same feel as Candyman. tongue.gif

Great minds think alike. As soon as I heard Canyman by Xtina I automtically thought of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. It's a blatant rip-off off that song. Like Girlfriend-Avril Lavigne and Hey Mickey - Tony Basil, or Umbrella - Rihanna and Zombie - Cranberries (that one is a bit more subtle).

Sorry, slightly off topic but if you are doing a dance set then there is a new remix of 'Rehab' on her new single 'Love is a losing game'.

I've been playing 'Valerie' since I got the Mark Ronson album yonks ago and it always works wherever I play. I usually follow it with 'Last Nite' by The Strokes, 'Are you gonna be my girl?' by Jet and 'Place your hands' by Reef. Guaranteed full dancefloor for at least 15/20 minutes.

Have a listen at Amy's version of Cupid. I love it and think her voice is amazing.
Such a shame that her life is such a mess, I for one have no time for her antics but you can't help but notice her talent.

ronsons mix of valerie is the doggs gets my foot tapping and always gets the girls moving

I have just got back from doing a 50th birthday party in Peterborough (211 miles away from where I live in Sunny Dorset), where 'Valerie' was requested over and over again all night, and although I very rarely play a record twice, I ended up playing it 7 (yes seven) times! After 7 times I resfused to play it any more! BTW gig was from 7.30pm - 3am. And yes, floor filled each time

It's not something that's happened to me at a party before, and hopefully it won't again. Or does that happen in othere counties?

So It appears to be a floorfiller and the newest entry into the 'cheese' folder
