How did you guys get all your cds because paying the normal price for like 5000 cd would be alot of cash. What do you guys do to get such a big collection and how do you chose which ones to buy.

Well I don't know about others, but to start I used to buy records as a kid so come my 20's I already had heaps (sigh such a long time ago) but once into DJ'ing I bought albums with anything dancy on at boot sales, markets, record shops reduced sections etc. At some point you go out and buy what you like in the top 30 or so, then if you can just buy the new entries every week 4-5 if you're lucky 7-9 if its a bad week within 10 weeks you have in your posession the whole top 40 -50........ you will get the hang of which are going to be no use and not worth buying and the established artists which are 'must haves'.
Once you are working regularly its not too hard to stay on top, but I can remember days of putting petrol in the van and blowing everything I had on chart stuff just to work that night and earn a bit more money than I laid out!!
So there are no hard and fast rules and heck nobody said this was a cheap business to get into !!!!!

Dear JP Play,
You may find useful in the forum Chris' link to the specialist DJ music suppliers, Mastermix, DMC etc. where you will be able to obtain the latest music prior to release and reasonably priced.
With regards to Chart stuff, personally you will find it hard to beat the Mastermix, Pro Disc series. I have subscribed to this since December last year, and in 5 months apart from the Pro-Disc costing £14.25 on monthly subsription, I have had to buy a total of 5 CD singles !

I buy DJ only discs that come out every month for a tenna. They come with all the latest releases or big hits of the month-anything to get away from paying greedy shops and record labels

lol!

"Classic Cuts" are a pro DJ series of discs - £15 each but most tracks are playable and they are difined in different music genres - loads of high street discs often only have 5/6 tracks worth playing. As a beginner just keep on collecting - you will only get out of this what you are prepared to put in - you wont get rich in your first year but will be working on your investments - which eventually will pay dividends!

I remember having a stand up row with Mastermix at Plasa a few years back over their definition of Pro DJ only. As all their discs are marked for DJ use only I objected to the general public being able to buy them willy nilly.
The outcome was that Disco shops are NOT supposed to sell them except to bona fide DJ's known to that shop, however I then got the money is money spiel and it would be very difficult to police etc etc.
I have passed this on to my local shop but being as how they are near a local secondary school it makes their life impossible, but nothing peeves me more than to play a DJ exclusive remix to be told "oh my mate went and bought that from so and so (Shop name withheld)"

Yes we swear by PRODISC issues and the mastermix CDs, these really limit the number of chart cds you need to buy, of course the odd surprise crops up, so you still have to pop out to buy the odd single.
Another tip, buy your albums from sainsburys they are cheapest there, and you mount up on the nectar points too saving money off future purchases.

Try www.cd-wow.co.uk - They have CD's from £6.99 (Useful ones that is!)...
Incidentaly, does anyone know where to get things like "Kylie vs Ludacris - Can't Lick You Outta My Bed" - I tend not to get Music Factory/DMC stuff so if there is something spectacularly useful on it, please let me know..

Unfortunately with tracks like that you have to join those of us who 'download' the tracks they need. For example I just did a search for that same track and came back with 19 available downloads.
