For the first time in a while, I managed to listen to about an hour of the Radio 1 top 40 chart show with Fern and Regie.

Now is it me, or has something gone very very badly wrong here?

I have two areas for discussion:

1. The format - Back in the good old days of Bruno Brooks and the other chappie who's name escapes me, we used to have a couple of hours on a sunday afternoon where they started at number 40 and counted there way down to the number one. I'm sure the only "improvement" was to make it a bit longer so they could play every track? It finished with a full run down getting to the number one with just enough time to play and finish at 7pm. Not anymore folks! Now it's like listening to the breakfast show or a Saturdaty afternoon fun quiz and if you listen hard, you might just hear the odd chart track, but god knows what order they are in. Bless them, I like many men think Fern is loverly, but please, bring back Mark Goodier!

2. Downloads. This is the first time since the inclusion of downloads I have heard the run down (and had time to take notice). Now I am sure thi will prompt a good debate - I'm sure it's lovely to see Phil Collins and Led Zeplin back in the UK top 40, but how on earth does this benefit the musical forum that is current music and a current music chart? At least we used to have a "top 40 sales" and a "top 40 download" chart, but how does it all manage to get so mixed up. There is clearly no distinction between what you might like to listen to and new music any more. How can a 1970's album track, presumably downloaded either as part of the album or because the individual downloaders decided they only liked particular tracks, form part of a contempory singles chart?

Lets discuss!

I stopped listening to the chart show a couple of years ago when it became more talk, less music. The last straw for me was when they ran competitions and had listeners live on air. I felt that there should have been someone tell them -

'In a minute you will be live on air to give your answer - if you are correct you will win however if you decide to scream so loudly down your phone that it becomes just a distorted horrible noise for our listeners we will take the prize away' rolleyes.gif

Cut the pooh.gif and play the top 40 I say.
