Full Version: Portrait Of A Diva

I'm the dj at a 80's/ 90's Diva show. I'm doing the music before the performer comes on and does her set, then in the interval, for 30 mins and then again once she's finished. She's singing mainly Madonna, Kylie, Aretha Franklin, Shania Twain, Cher and strangely enough Abba. Not sure how Abba fit in to the 80's and 90's, but there you go.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions of music that I could play. I'm not allowed to play any of the above artists. The first hour and a half will be while they are having a drink plus a meal, then I need to crank it up a bit for 30 mins before the act appears, then off and on throughtout the evening.

I was thinking of some Take That and Spice Girls too. What are the most popular tracks by these artists? I'm not expecting people to dance early on so I need some classics but not dance tracks.

The organisers of the event seem to want some more 90's dance tracks like CC Penistone's "Finally", Free etc. How well do they do down?

Have a look at the listings from some of the Now CDs, they should give you an idea of what was popular.
I think there is a thread somewhere that members were compiling the greatest ever playlist. Try searching for 'playlist' see what it throws up.
Remember there are no guaranteed floor fillers, what works well with one age group won't work for another, same thing with different parts of the country.

Is this your first gig?

I support a Robbie Williams tribute, At the beginning i tend to keep it average volume with general tracks and no party stuff - then have a song with a wkd beat for the track to lead into the ACT.

During the acts break i start with the party songs (enought time for 3-4) dependent on the acts break time.

The after the act finishes and does his encore - there aint much time left anyways - so i tend to play any other party tracks i havvent already played

I wouldnt worry to much about not being able to play songs by certain artists - theres millions of tracks you can fill with - Id sugest a "brain freeze" list beforehand and just remember most tracks or 3-4 minutes long - unless you play the 12" tongue.gif

It started at 7.00pm and finished at midnight. Total track play time is 4.80 hours, .2 of an hours was probably the awards presentation for best fancy dress. Time flew by though and could of played for a bit longer if the venue manager hadn't of been such a spoil sport.

As it's Divas, whack in a bit of Whitney - she's just released a new greatest hits which is at number 5 so must be popular...

Equally, Tiffany and Belinda Carlisle will go well..
