got a pair of subs but could do with a xover to run them, is it ok to go from mixer - sound enhancer - xover (lowoutput)- amp- subs.then do mixer- sound enhancer- amp - top/speakers.as they have built in x-overs wont need to go through the x-over. what you think ok?
DJ Marky Marc
No...

you could end up with all sorts of problems with phasing and x over points..

go

Mixer - > sound enhancer (god only knows why you want one of these) - > X OVER - > AMPs (one for tops one for subs ) - > Speakers....

I agree with Mark. The built in speaker crossover is not the most efficient of things and the electronic one might as well be included in the circuit since it's there for you for free and will give you more control over the crossover point.

What top speakers have you got that use a built in crossover? They're nornally in the bass bin rather than the tops!???! Are you sure the internal crossover isn't simply for splitting between woofer and tweeter rather than top cab and bass bin?

Electronic crossovers I've seen have outputs for low and high anyhow, so no need to miss out on this advantage.

Assuming for the moment your tops do have a built-in crossover, you could still clip the amp, and therefore introduce distortion, due to bass signals being fed to it, even if the speakers aren't using these signals. (may sound odd to some, but be assured it's true.) Far better to keep the whole mid/top chain free from bass signals. This has to be the biggest advantage here.

so what will it sound like if i dont run a sub or subs and still use the x over just for the tops class d jac 15(Speakers). its just some venues i just bring them and in others i bring the sub. will i have to re wire things at the back to miss out the x over so it sounds ok.

It probably depends on the make of the crossover. The Gemini one I use, you can individually control the frequencies of highs/mids/lows and the mid control gives the option of switching to full range.

i see so you dont need to disconnect cables at the back, just twiddle a few nobs to add subs or take them away. i was thinking of getting a behringer cx 2310 , does that do it.

with the 2310 you have two options..

you can unplug the XLRs from the xover and go direct to the amp when just running tops full range..

or dial the X over point back to 25hz and then all the sound will go to the tops anyway without you unpluging anything..
