Yes... we're almost within Advent Calendar opening range of the end of the year, and the shops are rapidly filling up with "Greatest Hits..." CD gifts of artists that we'll probably never hear another new release from ever again...
So, looking back over the last 10-12(ish) months, what have been your best and worst music purchases (or received gifts/promos)
For me:
Worst Album... Kate Nash: 1 x very very catchy track, in amongst a load of unplayable drivvel that could have been written by a 7 year old (for their younger brother or sister presumably).
Worst Single... The Salmon Dance...nasty wow & fluttery synths, mind-numbingly dull lyrics. A perfect case of "two wrongs dont make a right".
Best Album (compilation) - The 2 or 3 NOW albums that have slowly leaked out over the year.
Best Album (Single Artist) - Good Girl Gone Bad - Rhianna (na na na na a a a... lets not start that again)...
Best Single: Plain White T's - Hey there Delilah. Whenever I've played this over the last 2-3 months as buffet/background/coming in music, at least one group/table have burst into song, joining in.

I don't buy that many albums these days apart from the Now ones. Iwouldn't say they are my best purchases but probably the best I got this year.
Worst album I got was a 70's hit album I picked up cheap in Adrians but didn't read the small print that said "not by the original artists"
Don't have a favourite artist or track of the year either - I'll stick with Dire Straits

The two artists that have stood out for me this year are Mika & Amy Winehouse - be good if they did a duet.
Of the 15 number ones so far this year I've had my money's worth out of 10 of them - there hasn't been much else in the charts to get excited about though.
Worst album buy for me was the Mastermix Anthology 4CD set (OK poss not this years release but I bought it this year) - I only purchased it because a client specifically wanted the Dirty Dancing Mix but I didn't anticipate that, apart from it and one other track, the rest is unusable IMO.

I think the Amy Winehouse thing is an interesting one. Can't say I'm hugely fussed about her as a singer, but I do find her as a person a hugely dissapointing insite into our pop culture and icons. Surely it would be much better for the younger generation if she slinked off somewhere got everything out of her system and came back, rather than continuing to do so in the public eye - did anyone hear about the MTV awards last night? I rest my case!
As for great music, there has been a lot of real music around that I've loved - the indie / brit pop / rock type thing. Plain White T's - Hey there delilah was fantastic, however I hated the rest of the album. That "Dance to Joy Division" track is superb, I loved the Fratellis and so on.... Dance music has been great too - this years man of the moment for me MUST be Fedde Le Grand, talk about the tracks just getting better and better!
Albums? Well I loved the Mika Album and the come back Take That was great too!
As for worst - single? Has to be, without a shaddow of a doubt that aweful Umbrell song. How on earth did that happen?
As for albums - I guess the earlier dissapointment with the Plain White T's sums it up

Agree, I'm glad Mika came along. Great album, made a change. As for Amy Winehouse, she has a gift of a voice and Rehab was ok in my book.....and that's about it really, I'll say no more!
Can't put my finger on what was the best or worst single of 2007, there are so many contenders for either(for me) I wouldn't know where to stop!
Don't really like 'Bleeding Love' by Leona Lewis but that's just my opinion.
Most requested track for gigs (this year) would probably be 'Shine' by Take That. If I can hear it on the adverts and on the radio - it still doesn't bother me so that can't be that bad either!
Close second would have to be the Scissors!
Other choices, I actually liked the collaboration between Robbie and the PSBs 'She's Madonna' and the great re-mix of 'Read My Mind' by the Killers off the PSBs 'Disco 4' album.
PS - Most interesting radio tracks for me was 'Annie, Let's Not Wait' by the Guillemots as it bugged me in the arrangement, Paul McCartney's 'Dance Tonight' as it always seemed to be playing when driving down to Tesco's, and I really adore The Proclaimers 'Life With You' although the video is odd!
Has to be said, radio this year has been very good for the road!

Best Album - Music is our way of life - Full Flava
Worst album - Don't know but agree that the Kate Nash one was pretty poor

What is it with Amy Winehouse?
maybe I'm not at the cutting edge of music and we like what we like, but there's a few I don't get.
Artic Monkeys - What's that all about?
Babyshambles????
I'll duck and wait for the fallout! lol!

Well what a year
My year ended in July 2007
Up until then - I think Mika has topped the music side, excellent tracks - a difference to what has been released from other artists.
Purchase wise - i think it has to be (Non DJ related) My new house in greece
This year has had its up and downs, And i was sad to close the business - but the grass is greener.
Hope everyones had a good year and bring on 2008!

Top singles - Scouting for Girls - She's So Lovely, went down a storm at the end of the Wedding season, especially if you dedicated it to the bride from her new 'other half' and for sheer vibrance The View - Same Jeans.
Worst single - Sugababes/Girls Aloud - Walk this Way, not a patch on the original and what are the lyrics, is it decipherable ? Appreciate it is a charity single but it is just pap.
Best Album - DJ Wise - Now 66, an absolute classic, Personal favourite Thrills - Teenager, saw them live recently, a great band and the compilation Radio 1 Established 1967, an interesting mix of covers by today's bands, although what the Streets are doing on there god only knows.
Worst album - Mainstream - agree with Kate Nash, bloody awful and over-rated. Most diappointing - Joss Stone..Introducing, a great voice that seems to have lost direction.

Worst Album... "Omarion 21". I loved the single "Ice Box" shame the rest of the album is so bad.
Best Album ... "As Cruel As School Children" Gym Class Heroes
Worst Single.. "Headlines" The Spice Girls. Should be called "Headlice" because the best thing to do with it is to get rid of it as soon as possible.
Best Single.. not sure I can pick just one.
Best Compilation.. "In The Mix" Revival". I know it's been around for a while but it's the best one I've bought for a while!

Things I Hated This Year:
Amy Winehouse & Pete Doherty- I wish they'd disappear. I never want to hear about wither of them again and have never enjoyed their music.
New artists, mainly off myspace, who are regaled for writing childish, meaningless nursery rhymes and speaking them (usually in a cockney accent) over a crappy beat (Kate Nash, Jamie T, Lily Allen etc)
Mark Ronson - who? what? why?
Lack of decent new dance music - it's been a really poor year on the dance front with only a few decent new tracks, and a load of gamp!
Grossly over-rated British bands hyped by Radio 1/NME etc who are embarrassingly bad.
Only having about 3 songs in the top 40 each week that don't feature Timbaland and/or Akon.
Things I Liked This Year:
I put this as my top 10 songs on 2007 on my website. I've probably forgot some as I did it quickly and drunkenly.
1 Potential Break-up Song - Aly & AJ
2 Apologize - One Republic/Timbaland
3 Cupids Chokehold - Gym Class Heroes ft Patrick Stump
4 Forever Young - Waterboy (The one with the kids singing)
5 Stronger - Kanye West
6 I Want Your Soul - Armand Van Helden
7 Mary's Song (My My My) - Taylor Swift
8 Hate - Plain White Tees
9 Here (In Your Arms) - HelloGoodbye
10 The Worrying Kind - The Ark

My two fav artists of the year are probably Scouting for Girls or the Pigeon detectives!
And song of the moment for me right now.....
The Wombats - Lets dance to joy division
Least favorite is deffinately Amy Winehouse......hate her with a passion avoid playing her at all costs and would only play her as a request and they would have to ask twice too!!!
Worst single of the year.......Leona Lewis - Bleeding (hell) love......

Least favorite song this year has to be Leonna Lewis - Blledin' love - bleedin' rubbish IMO
So much good new music to chose from, possibly something like Axwell - Found U, but the High Contrast version which is starting to emerge now.

It's really good to see how diverse all of our choices are.
I think Amy Winehouse has a great voice, although I think she's got a self destruct button and I'll be amazed if she's still around this time next year, but fully understand why some people can't stand her.
I know people think that DJs are all the same, but I think that there are some wide variations in the music we play, and having looked at others playlists feel we can all learn from each other.
