This is a brilliant idea for a thread!!!!

I was asked to cover for a mate on Sunday night at a local club for 2 hours as he was stuck somewhere else until 11pm.
The venue was mostly a chart crap venue. I do say this through gritted teeth, but the more I'm playing current chart stuff, the more I'm actually finding I like some of them!

I'm no expert. I tend to play client playlists. If I have any of these / background music compilations in my old playlist logs, I'll share.

After Tell Me Ma I always usze Country Road the Herms House Band version - Dancy...and the Irish go mad for it!! I am also Irish! Super stuff by the way Robbie.

I do not to play fields of Athenry the same as i dont play blue moon or never walk alone or we are the champions as i dont like riots and my head being kicked in! but thats a great list... DJ Dave Ireland.

someone literally punched my speaker over . sending it flying when i played Galway girl the sharron shannon, steve earle version as " he didnt like the song as his family from ireland died before that song came out" apparently..no i couldn't get the logic either ..or it could have been the three lines of stuff and five sambuccas that make him a nutter.

With my volatile customers i tend to stay away from irish songs but that list has some good ones i can use ..thanks matey.

Lads, I have a few Xmas parties coming in now. Any thoughts/ideas on playlists/suggestions. Normally 2-3 hours at the most after the meals. Do you play much xmas stuff/chart? Or do you treat it like a wedding afters?

This will vary by the crowd - some companies have lots of youngsters, others lots of oldies.

Most will be up for a bit of cheese at some point, and depending on the times, you may be able to play some modern stuff, and when tease a few cheesy tracks in.

If you are playing background during the meal, use that to get a feel for what's likely to go down. Perhaps chat with a few tables to gather some requests..


I've got a few Christmas parties this year - one for a DIY center (background during meal, then a mixed crowd), the other my local pub (mostly 30s+).

I have two Xmas parties coming up where I will probably only play from 10/1030 to 1230am. Not sure about the crowd yet until the night but assume most of it will be chart and a few of the above xmas usuals! ;) Do the xmas ones go down well this early?

I dont usually play four off the belt I play one every half an hour.

I've read through some of the playlists on here and pinched some good ideas so thought I'd best publish my recent list. From when the dancing started properly just before 23.00 until close it was a great evening.

Christmas party, age range 30 - 50. I was expecting to play "80's/90's oldies" mixed with the odd recent hit but in fact it was the other way round!

Beatmatching definitely worked this night as people didnt leave the dancefloor because the song had ended (because it didnt)! They left either for oxygen/CPR/the bar or for the loo. About 80% of the tracks during the dance session were beatmatched.

Ignore 19:48 through to 22:47 as this was background and nobody was really listening (although they would have noticed silence!) I snuck in a couple of really bad songs (see if you can spot them) to see if anyone cringed, but I could have played the NZ/Barbarians commentary and got noticed more!!

wow that a really different play list some i have never heard of BUT i will this week.. i will listen to a few and see what i like , i love lists like this as it keeps my mind fresh and not on the same stale clichéd songs it also broadens my musical knowledge as i do get a few who like this general area of music, on a note i play freebird for one guy who asks for it BUT it goes on for ages and is a great personal music song ie in your car on yor ipod etc but at a venue unless the crowd dig it it does drag on .
I have been requested tracks like sandman by metallica and i have a edited short version i did myself as again it does drag on for a average venue unless the crowd are really into it.

sorry for my ignorance but are the numbers at the beginning of your list the time you started playing the track?

Yeah I use Virtual DJ and its the time I played the track. The bar I was in is primarily a rock/alternative/punk/ska blah blah bar.

Was covering for the normal DJ, I felt privilidged. Some of the stuff on there I would never play at the average wedding though!

Cheers Gar, that's perfect. To be honest, I knw it's gonna be cracker gig as I will know most of the crowd there. However I just want to have a guideline in front of me as usual for my gigs. Havent done a 21st in a while. I want to try and keep the first 2-3 hours quite upbeat as possible. Dont want to go for broke though with the songs I would play in the last hour or two though. Does anyone ever think about gigs too much like I do or get nnnneeeerrvous at all?

Sorry for taking so long on this one. Had a great gig, again it took a while to get going. Always after the speeches and cake/21 kisses etc it only kicks in but the crowd were great and the build up music went well. I would 100% suggest that you always keep at the floor for requests as I found it guided me well into the next set. Mainly 80% of a young crowd so a lot of chart and some cheeze. Now 2 of the girls that were at it want me to do theirs, a joint one and an 80's theme where they are dressing up etc. I've never done that and would be very weiry and nervous about a themed 21st? Any thoughts?
