Hi, you know what it's like when you've done a good few weddings they all start to take the same sort of pattern. So when someone passes an 18th Birthaday on to me I thought hooray!!!! I can dig out my new Pro Disc and probably play a bit of R&B anything other than the usual party tunes. How wrong was I, first request of the night " Can you play some Motown "? and then I get asked for Barry White!!!! The people which had asked for it got up and danced, no problem, but then I get moans from the younger ones, so when I stick some up to date stuff on it clears the floor. I can't understand it, people are obviously familiar with the music because most of what I played is on the "A" list on Radio One and in the charts, maybe I just got an akward crowd wallbash.gif
kazzachi
Dont worry about it.. its always going to happen... just say to the ones who want new stuff that you are playing for the people who are ready to dance now... and as you reckon that they are happier in the bar for the moment. thought you wold get onto the new stuff a bit later... when they are up for it......... Make a point of saying at the beginning of the evening that you will be playing for everyone.. so if its not their cup of tea to begin with.. dont panic... you will be playing everything!

Played a gig 2 weeks ago for 15 - 17 year olds and was relly looking forward to playing some upfront new music, first request Europe " Final Countdown",second Weather Girls " Raining Men" ! It happens a lot, kids are often influenced by their parents\siblings musical tastes so it pays to be prepared for anything!

Most of us 'experienced' DJ's could chose 50 records and just take them to all our gigs, we would get asked for stuff we didn't have but we would also have people dancing, don't worry about it, the next gig is always the best one.

Remember.. crowds are hardly ever predictable... so try not to assume that just because you are working for a young/old crowd that they are going to like the stuff you think they like! I always ask my clients what sort of music they are into and what they want playing at their gig.
Ian Stewart
All I can judge thing by is what my children are litening to, My 16 year old daughter is into R&B, but listens to a huge amount of party classics as well, so the music being requested is not that unusual
Loz
Thanks for the replies, I'm pleased it's not just me then. I don't know how you people are finding the charts at the moment but it's very difficult to play anything decent above 100bpm. The R&B thing seems to have a huge impact on the current music scene and admittedly there are some fine songs around at the moment but they are hard to get a party going with them. 533.gif

I'm finding it more and more recently at 18th/21st type do's that the r'n'b style of music is wanted late in the function when most of the older ones, granny and grandad, long lost aunts etc... have gone home and the kids are left.
Some cracking tunes this year in that mould but the old 'uns are not going to jig around to Blu Cantrell / Beyonce.

No, it's gotta be 'Santa Clause You C censored.gif ' by Kevin Bloody Wilson biggrin.gif

I actually have the original of that track.
It was first recorded by Judge Dread, he of Big 6, Big 7 etc fame. At the time he recorded it he was mostly working with Creole records. A good mate of mine was working at creole at that time and used to give me copies of all of their promo's, releases etc.
One day around 1985/6 I was in his office and he played me a cassette (remember them tongue.gif ) of Judge Dread doing Santa Clause You c. I was on the floor when I heard it. But my mate said that Creole weren't gonna release it cos they didn't think it would sell, so it was forgotten all about, except I got a copy of the tape and played it at gigs every now and then over the next 10 years or so.
Then suddenly sometime in the 90's I heard the Kevin Bloody Wilson version! It's very similar to Judge Dreads version, although obviously the original doesn't have that Aussie twang wacko.gif
I copied it onto CD a few years ago and sometimes play it at gigs now if the crowd is right!
kazzachi
Santa claus you C@'# is also on one of the christmas classic cuts... I often use this disc for the background stuff whilst they are eating at d/ds... but if you are going to do the same... make sure you DONT play track 21.... could cause offence!

Now you gotta bear in mind, that this REALLY is an exclusive and there's probably a handful of DJ's in the country at most that have this track by Judge Dread.
So why would I wanna just go and share it out willy-nilly 533.gif sterb188.gif

I'm happy to say that (so called) Rn'B is not as big in Yorkshire, where I'm based, as it is in other areas, especially London / Essex areas. There is some support for it, you get the Radio 1 playlist sheep everywhere, but not as much biggrin.gif .

This is fine from my point of view since I find the majority of it uninspiring, unimaginative, repetative, inteligence insulting rubbish... easily the worst genre of music in my career as a DJ 1106.gif

I do now..have so far heard 6,7,8,& 10! Oh and 5 but that wasnt JD's but Prince Busters.....then I got the full blown history on the guy his music and his death which then turned into a row between ma & pa on who actually owned these records which then led to the entire Reggae collection coming out dad singing that Boris Gardiner tune Oh my comanding wife to my muver for the past fortnight the history of skinheads and the tighten up volumes which ive heard oh so many times to a mini goldmine in the form of records on the bullet label wacko.gif
And you wonder why I'm crazy!

Yep it's both. Prince Buster did a track called 'Big 5' and also did a track called 'Judge Dread (Judge 1,000 years)'. Madness also got their name from the Prince Buster track called 'Madness'. The Specials first song 'Gangsters' was a copy of the Prince Buster track called 'Al Capone'. The Specials & Madness copied many of PB's songs and many other artists have as well, and the first release by Madness which was called 'Prince' was a tribute to guess who? biggrin.gif
Everyone should have a copy of Prince Buster - 'Fabulous' (Greatest Hits) in their collection it is a true gem.

Fair enough each to their own, but I don't agree with this whatsoever. Maybe if you're only hearing the radio 1 commercial type R&B that would be why it all sounds similar, but there is a lot of good R&B about. Artists such as Dennis Taylor (not the snooker player biggrin.gif ), Fabulous, Carl Thomas, Rahsaan Patterson and, Joe to name a few, have all released some fantastic stuff in the last year or so, plus some of the oldies like Aretha Franklin & The Isley Bros have also released some good albums.
From some of your comments, I would hazard a guess that it's probably current rap that you really dislike. There are a lot of rap artists at the moment who have no imagination or creativity when it comes to their lyrics, and 95% of them all produce identical video's!
Chrispy
I get asked for some R&B at the Club spot although it's always the commercial air play stuff, and non stop mind numbing requests for "Dirty" which if I was sane in the first place, could very much drive you around the twist.

On the mobile front, I must admit I rarely get asked, and the odd occasion i've played it, it has cleared the dancefloor, maybe coincidence?. Either way it could strengthen the aforementioned discussions over music tastes as well as prices having a definitive north - south divide?. I'm not in Yorkshire, but I'm close enough.

All we need now are some D.J's from the Midlands, and the Black Country now to act as a "control" tongue.gif

The comments about radio one really hilites the differance between London/Home counties and the rest of the country, as Radio 1 is not in the top 3 most listened to stations in this area.

To the rest of the country Chris Tarrent is a TV presenter, to those in the Home Counties he is the presenter of the most listened to Breakfast show.

I got the new mixes of the Aretha Tune, superb
Chrispy
Which begs the other question....Does the local radio have an influence on Musical Tastes in each area or vice versa??.

In this area we have 3 local independant stations, playing a mixture mainly of Cheese and Oldies. We also have the overspill of 3 larger Manchester Based commercial stations playing Dance & R&B. But nothing which specialises in one genre.

On my trip down the London for the PLASA, with the constantly radio twiddling passengers, it was amazing just how many more stations became available south of Birmingham, many of them obviously playing specialised era's and types as well as the more general chart & cheese and commercial stations.

I must admit that I get lost when following some of the discussions relating to one genre of music, or more specialised R&B or Soul tracks. Although maybe what is classed as being specialised to me in this area, is playlist material in other area's?.
Ian Stewart
when I was working at Soul City, in our TSI region (east London) there were 36 radio stations (not including the pirates)

It's a fair point you make here and maybe I am being a bit unfair. I will have a listen to some of the artists you mention and see what they have to offer. I'll be a bit wary of listening to the Aretha Frankilin remixes though. Being the traditionalist and devotee of the 60s / Stax / Atlantic soul music that I am, it disturbs me when my idols, like Ms Franklin notworthy.gif are dragged "up to date". I still haven't got over the disappointment of 'Freeway of Love' from the eighties... thumbdown.gif
