stupid question but what connections are at the back and do they connect up to each light from it

Usually a 3pin xlr connection. (though can be a 5 pin)



Go out from that into your first light, then from the first light into your second and repeat to fade..

You forgot to mention the gender.. its a female XLR... opposite to audio which uses male as an output.
