I am getting another laptop soon, and it will be used as a business computer, I would like to know what you guys use for your PC diary and which accounts software you use.
I am at the moment using Outlook for my diary but have found that if I have 6 or more appointments at the same time, ie. 8 discos on a Saturday evening, each one starting at 8pm, I can only view the first six, in any view, day/month etc. OK if you only have 3 or 4 discos but on some nights we all have a few more discos that 6 and I would like to view all of them at the same time so I know which DJ is where.
I have also looked at getting Sage for my accounting, does anyone use this, or which is the best to use (Ian?) before I part with a couple hundred quid for the pleasure of it.
I may also look at getting some sort of software to take bookings and send confirmations, and to keep a track on who owes me what and what I pwe people, maybe Sage could do tha latter ?
I look forward to your replies and getting all the new software onto my computer.
Also isthere any major different between Office 2002 Pro and Office XP Pro ? I was thinking of buying the latest one, with a free upgrade to 2003 when it comes out. Am I wasting my money or is it a good investment.
Please bear in mind that I will be looking after 3 businesses on this computer so don't mind spending a little cash if it makes things simplier and easier in the long run, time is money and all that !!

Ads,
I also use outlook for my diary, it works for me.
Accounts pacages, I use sage Line 50 financial controller edition which lets you set up differant sets of accounts for differant busineses, but you have to buy a licence for each company name, but if you are running the accounts for just one busines, Instant Accounts will do the job.
Sage is not the easiest to use, but for me the best, and your industry standard as well. Their support line is superb.

For online control over your bookings, I keep getting spammed by
DJ INTELLIGENCE - its quite expensive, but has a good reputation and has loads of features

. Maybe a little bit OTT for the Part Time D.J or those just starting up, but if you are out a lot, then it may be worth the investment.

Providing it's legal, doesn't involve chain letters, MLM or selling my body then yes!

Hi y'all!
We use Sage software and it does pretty much everything you'll need it to do.
Another good one is Filemaker pro, is simpler and cheaper than Sage and has a good reputation.
£14k plus a year without selling your body...hey I don't mind selling my body but let's hear it.

Hi ADS,
Yep I have the perfect answer.
An A4 Diary (lol), or Lotus Organiser. Why not the P800????
Accounts, A 16:1 Ledger.
If your a bit clever you could use Excel for both. My Computer Guru use's Quicken, he reckons it's brill.
I will move to Sage, (have used it in the past) when i become a multi million poud international company - It's a bit OTT for the likes of us. Also if you put a wrong entry be accident, your stuffed it's there, so what the decimel points.

Once looked at Sage briefly and couldn't work it out. It would probably need a good bit of reading up.
An ex collegue of mine bought it and says its great.

A4 diary is still the best but I am quickly forgetting how to write with all the computer now.
Have just brought a 2004 diary and transferred all my dates into it, but would like to keep in computised AS WELL, NOT INSTEAD. but like I say Outlook is OK if you only have 5 appointments at the same time.

Mikeee,
The P800 is great which is why I want a computer based booking system in place so I can carry my diary around with me at all times, and take bookings on the road, without having to write in a diary each time.

Well I seem to do a bit of everything................ All bookings are kept in a diary which stays at home in case of evening phone calls (+ it don't get lost or nicked) then all these are transferred to Outlook on the desktop but finally Outlook is synchronised with my Dell Axim which stays with me! (Not really three lots of work as Outlook looks after the handheld and makes sure its up to date!)

Same as me Spin, just like the idea of seeing each gig, not just the first 6, although I can look on my P800 which states all of them.
Booking comes in, into A4 diaryand onto Outlook, sync Outlook with P800 and everything is up to date, I think I may just bite the bullet on this one and stick to this way

Looks good, except it's American so $ not £, and Zip codes etc, will take a closer look though, unless you do, or are thinking of doing, an English version.

I use DJ Intelligence and have found it EXTREMELY useful. You can use the £ sign and much of it is customisable so you can change zip code to postcode.
One of the only things that's not customisable so far is the date format which is the American one, i.e. the very confusing month, day, year - rather than the logical day, month, year - that we use.
Have had a look at the DJ Webmin but am personally not overly impressed. This is not so customisable and from what I can remember when I looked at it, was very Americanised, and I didn't feel it was suitable. For instance the time format was only east or west coast and there was no option for GMT. You had to select a State, but as we know, over here we have Counties, but for many people living in Cities (especially in London), even the County is not relevant.
...BUT; for someone like ADS, I could see it being very useful, as the full version is geared for agents and those looking after many bookings/many dj's per night. For single use, i.e. just taking care of your own gigs, the lite version is most relevant. Hopefully if they make a few changes for the UK/Euro market it will be much more appropriate.
