I have a wedding coming up soon where there will be a sizeable number of guests from New Zealand.

I have been informed that they will be bringing some tunes with them but forewarned is forearmed so any must plays (& not plays) ideas would be welcome.

Messrs Rendezvous and NickLogan should be able to help out in this department, if they're aroound, perhaps?

Also if I remember correctly 'treen74' has emigrated there recently, so I expect she'll have had her ears to the ground & have a better idea of what does & doesn't work...

Will be curious as to whether there's any Finn-related material in the suggestions! smile.gif

Guy Sebastian is well liked over there. My mums best friend lives in hastings over there I'll ask her. I know that alot of them like Rock N Roll there 2 as well as some of 70's music.

Crowded House is the really obvious one (especially since they have recently reformed).

It is worth nothing that they are from NZ and Australia so a mixture of the two really!

Thanks for the input thus far. I've found this site which lists the top 100 NZ tunes ever (+ 33 more). Dave Dobbyn's seems to feature quite a lot and apart from Crowded House I'm afraid that the rest don't seem to get the air play here that they might otherwise deserve (=I've never heard of them) sad.gif

I am trying to fix a meeting with the B&G but unfortunately neither live here - they are coming over for the wedding, along with friends/family from NZ, Scotland & Ireland (I feel a Proclaimers/Pogues/Crowded House mix in the offering)

I've also checked out the Top 40 chart link provided thumbup.gif and it seems that Umbrella was at No 1 there for several weeks too scared.gif holding off Buy You A Drank (Shawty Snappin') T-Pain feat. Yung Joc

While this is by no means a comprehensive list, I'd want to be armed with as many of the following as I could, just to be prepared:

Oldies (50s, 60s etc)
Ray Columbus & The Invaders - She's A Mod
The Fourmyula - Nature
The Swingers - Counting The Beat

70s & 80s
Ardijah - Watching You
Coup d'Etat - Doctor I Like Your Medicine
Dave Dobbyn - Slice Of Heaven
DD Smash - Outlook For Thursday
Dragon - Are You Old Enough
Mockers - Forever Tuesday Morning
Tim Finn - Fraction Too Much Friction

Dub
Black Seeds - So True
Fat Freddy's Drop - Roady
Fat Freddy's Drop - Wandering Eye
Katchafire - Giddy Up
Salmonella Dub - Love Your Ways

Party Favourites
Dragon - April Sun In Cuba
Dragon - Rain
Supergroove - Can't Get Enough
Supergroove - Sitting Inside My Head
The Dudes - Bliss
The Exponents - Who Loves Who The Most
The Exponents - Why Does Love Do This To Me

Cheesy Fun Stuff
Englebert Humperdinck - Ten Guitars (not a Kiwi artist of course, but a classic 'beach barbeque' anthem)
Fred Dagg - Gumboots
Papa-Pa - My Black Jersey
Patea Maori Club Ft Dalvanius - Poi E
Hemi - Pretty Fly For A Maori Guy (2:24)

2000s Rock
The Tutts - K (3:24)
Zed - Glorafilia (3:16)

Slower or Background
Bic Runga - Drive
Bic Runga - Sway
Breaks Co-Op - The Otherside
Brooke Fraser - Albertine
Brooke Fraser - Arithmetic
Brooke Fraser - Deciphering Me
Crowded House - Always Take The Weather With You
Crowded House - Better Be Home Soon
Crowded House - Chocolate Cake
Dave Dobbyn - Loyal (BIG song!)
Goldenhorse - Maybe Tomorrow
Hello Sailor - Blue Lady
Herbs - Sensitive To A Smile
John Rowles - Island In The Sun
Mark Williams - It Doesn't Matter Anymore
Muttonbirds - Dominion Road
Sharon O'Neill - Maxine
Shona Laing - Glad I'm Not A Kennedy
Split Enz - I Got You
Split Enz - Message To My Girl

Some of the big sing-along rocking tracks that have been consistent performers for me over the years are in the Party Favourites set. Chuck on "The Exponents - Why Does Love Do This To Me" during a set of classic 80s sing-along rock (Bon Jovi, ACDC, etc) and you ought to get the Kiwis in good voice. The bass guitar intro DEMANDS a nudge up on the volume fader!

BTW, that's a big fat NO to Guy Sebastian. Australians like him. Here- not so much.

Just wanted to share this as it isn't just for me:

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for your work on our big day - you really helped make the day special and your research in getting songs for the New Zealanders was greatly appreciated as really made the night for them and everyone commented on what a good night it was. Your professional and friendly approach was great and we will definitely recommend you to anyone we know getting married in the future.

Thanks again - thumbup.gif

PS Patea Maori Club Ft Dalvanius - Poi E went down so well I had to play it twice smile.gif

Paul, that's AWESOME news. I'm pleased I could help you there. Ironically I had a similar request from Peter Merry in America the same week- he has a Kiwi Groom and Californian Bride and there will be a group of Kiwis there to celebrate alongside the Americans. Put that testimonial on your website!

That song 'Poi E' was HUGE here in New Zealand in the 1980s and it's become a real cult 'kitsch' fun hit again over recent years. It's hard not to smile when you play the song, especially when you've seen the break dancer in the white gloves at the end of the clip!

Here's the video:

smile.gif definitely a foot tapping song & brought back some good memories. The 1st time I played it (just after a Boney M track) all the Kiwis danced - the 2nd time I did it as part of a Kiwi/Irish set and the dancefloor was packed with circle within circle and 2 in the middle at a time smile.gif
