Ok, we'll worry about the logistics later eg: How many cans of Red Bull Chris will need to drink to stay awake long enough to get all the entries posted up somewhere...linked to here...
In the meantime....lets vote. What sort of mix should start the ball rolling? I'd guess the deadline for the completed/submitted mixes will be early November.
After we've all voted for one of the above mix styles, we'll invite members to suggest track listings which MUST be mixed by the entrants of the contest. Each Entrant is allowed to "drop" one of the tracks, either if they havent got it, or just dont like it. We'll aim for all the tracks to be commercially favoured - no white labels, promo type tracks etc.
Of course, if you're thinking that I've missed off a certain type of mix, mention it and we'll add it to the vote for the next mixing competition.
Go on now Go.....I mean.... VOTE! Pic'a'mix.
We'll take this polls totals on Tuesday 14th October, to decide which style of mix we're gonna go for.

Its neck'n'neck (and we didnt even have a smootchie mix, as an option)
Vote now...

Currently....we have a leader "An Old + New Mix of "Current" and "Older" dance titles" has 5 votes, against "Party mix" with 4 votes.
Lets go for that then? Shall we?....

Does that sound like a good idea?
Then to add a little individual flavour, each entrant could be allowed to add, one, or two tunes of their own selection.

DJ-Vu will probably be the name of the next bit of DJ laptop software to get released.

Like the idea, although count me out, I'm far too old to be messing about with records/CD's etc, press play, watch people dance, press play again and 4 hours later collect cash, unfortunately that is what DJ'ing is becoming to me. Sorry if you are a newbie reading this as you will have all the 'get up and go' eager to start, which I did in 1983 but in 2003 it has waned a little.

All Im gonna say about rules is...
Anyone who was at PLASA this year will know that most of the DJ products now do just about all of the work for you!!!
The competition is about Creativity, Originality and Skill.
Use whatever means you have available to give your MIX the edge.
Anybody worried about being disadvantaged, their is plenty of free software around. Its all the same whatever way you look at it.
Anyway what about DJ's that only use PC to mix.
I prefer hardware myself, I'm just putting the point across.

It doesn't getb itself out of the van set itself up and put it all away again. But you never know another couple of years..........................................................................................
aclassdisco
Oct 21 2003, 10:22 PM
There's no need for that, you know exactly what i was getting at!
Although the day a model that gets itself out the van and sets up for you comes out, I'll be the first to have one.
On a serious note though: Any new DJ starting out doesnt have to learn the skills involved in training your ears to beat-match quickly. The machine does it for you. Of course there is still mix style...but denon and pioneer will work that one out soon enough.
Also I found out today I have an ear infection and possible permenant hearing loss/damage.

Might start a topic about this - see if anyone else is suffering at all and what measures they take to protect their most delicate/important tool of the trade.
Ross.

Hi all,the hearing loss subject keeps popping up and has been discussed, its common and i am down to 50% on my left ear. I started mixing when we had to count the beats using a stopwatch so i am a bit against the old computer mixing myself but maybe its the fear of something new?

Although Pioneer (and others) did try to make an auto-mixing CD-deck (the CMX-5000) its one that they are desparately trying to forget. They'd barely shipped out 2,500 units when reports started coming back in about units freezing up, stopping the music on both decks, and locking the DJ out of the controls, if the CD-deck got confused during Auto-mix.
Also, whilst quite a few CD-decks offer a "guideline" BPM counter, I've yet to find a CD-deck, or even laptop program which works out the music phrasing correctly. EG: working correctly with the "one... two... three... four.... one... two... three... four.... one... two... three... four...." etc...running in our heads as we mix.
As for the competition rules therefore, I guess we should DJU members to use whatever hardware they would use for DJ'ing with. However in the case of laptop/PC DJ'ing then perhaps no "Auto" buttons should be allowed.

Hey Gary
I know it doesnt do it exactly, but is very close.
Numark CDN88 with beat keeper. Had a play with a mates a couple of weeks ago.
It gets the bpm right for you, locks it, then no matter what you do - Scratch it, Pitch it, Back Spin it, it gets it right whenever you let it play again.
It's defenitely a step in the right direction.
Im still on Gemeni CD340's they dont have any magic in them at all.
Im just saying what I think. As long as the Mix isn't done automatically, ie. Put a list of songs in and press auto, members should be able to do whatever they want.
I don't mind that much either way. I play by the rules.

I have used the CD player that you talk about I find it full of features but not very accurate to mix with it feels a bit cheap but as you say it is definitely a step in the right direction

Ding ding! All change... someone extra has voted for "Party Mix"
Quick....lets move onto the next step....lets have a few members choose ONE party song each which needs to be included in each contestants/participants mix.
One "request" per member.
GO!

Who do we send the mix to when done, and on what format? Eg mp3?
Gary

Gulp! I thought that given how close we are to the Christmas Season starting so soon, that many members would have to postpone an entry until after Christmas now.
But I could be wrong of course...
I know that I'd have trouble finding time in the next couple of weeks to get one done.
But, I'll try and submit one in the next 2 weeks if everyone else is.

Hey Gazza - are you going to set this mixing competition then?, and set a closing date for enteries?

- yes I agree that we should make the closing date for Early Jan to give those D.J's who are busy over Dec, time to take part, and those who are getting decks for Chrimbo a chance to join in!

.
After all - it will give you chance to mix it and get it uploaded / sent to me on CD over the Xmas Period when the "Towering Inferno" and "39 Steps" are on the telly.
Gary
Nov 21 2003, 04:43 PM
YES!
Mixing competition
A "Party Mix", with a maximum running time of (lets say) 20 minutes.
Closing date: Send your CD's to Chris - before Saturday 31st January 2004.
I might be able to razzle up a token prize too. (No, not something with a mains plug on it!) or maybe Chris might have some of those Remote Control Cars /Trucks left over...

Nov 21 2003, 07:16 PM
OK old boy... but if I win I dont want a prize remotely to do with dj-ing.... a nice BIG box of choccies will do!
Gary
Apr 1 2005, 02:55 PM
Ye gads, what happened to this?
Did Chris recieve any Party mix entries?
Did Kazza get her huge box of choccies?
Will someone win it by double-clicking their entry together using a studio auto-mix software package and conscience suppression utility...?
Does anyone really want to cue up a party tune THIS far away from Christmas?

As a newbie here I'm just reading up all the old threads.
I'd be interested in this - could you post an example of what you are looking for, eg, just a good mix of songs that work well together or a beatmatched from start to finish 20 mins worth. I don't often do that at parties, but every now and again I get the urge.
Cheers,
Jack.

If you a have a mix that you would like to share with us, but have a problem hosting it. You can upload your Audio files for Free to the link below. Simply upload and paste the link which will be displayed to allow others to download and listen.
Maximum file size of each upload is 50mb, which should be plenty for an average quality 15 or 20 minute mix.
