Right...

So I have just spent like £600 on my Numark Axis CD decks and stanton mixer and now have decided to get into the party djing and start off gigging.

I will start at pubs/parties/home functions etc, just to get my confidence up.

How much of this will I need:
10 Metre Extension Flex
Black Table Cloth
Laptop Carry Bag???
DJ Light
Decks Flight Case
Microphone

Smoke machine for lights???
Disco Laser lights?
Stand for laser lights
Speakers
Speaker stands

Please could you just tell me if I am on the right track as I am stuck for what to buy and I don't want to spend a lot... I have included a list of ebay item numbers below.

Cheers! Ben

Mr P
Hi there

I am sure most of the guys/girls on here will put you in the right direction, but with regards to a smoke machine - most of the venues that i work at do not allow you to use smoke machines or fog machines because of smoke detectors that are fitted.

Thanks

i would say at least 3 extension leads 1 for lights,1 for sound and 1 spare
if you are using cd's you will need a couple of lights to put on thre table so you can read the covers,at least 1 decent microphone.i wouldnt go for laser lights just starting out,and as mr p said a lot of places dont allow smoke machines.dont think you really need a uv light.

Leave the smoke machine, and laser at home.

Few people use the smoke machine now.
DJBJ
Ah, right ok...

So the laser lights are no good for DJ-ing?

If someone asks for an event at a bithday party do I need disco lights.... Am I looking in completely the wrong direction???

Please help!

If your on a budget have a look at the wildtech lights made by acme very good for the money and when the money comes in then look at the isolution also made by acme but more for the professional.

the dynamo scans are also a good buy.

reading your other post.......

I think what your calling Lazer lights are not lazer lights

I think you mean scans/moving head type lights

These dont need smoke in darker areas

as for extentions and leads etc

you need to set up in the kitchen or something haha

see what you need and buy the stuff

only you will know what you will need, for the gear that youve got.

ok, you have the players and mixer....have you got the music, if so, how much?
have you a decent set of speakers, if so which ones

Lights come after sound and stuff really
DJBJ
I have about a thousand songs....

.... And no speakers as of yet.... I was thinking of hiring them my first few times until I get the cash to buy some... Bad idea?
Mr P
Hi

I do not think hiring speakers is the way to start, you can get some cracking speakers if you shoparound - try to avoid second hand on ebay, from shop sellers should be ok if they are new - at least youknow they have not been blasted.

By the time you have paid the costs for hiring speakers you are not going to be walking away from your first few gigs with a light pocket, if it were me starting out again i would certainly buy them new plus you will also get warranty with them.

The guys on here will certainly guide you around, but i would certainly sit down and think about the direction you are going to go in.

Cheers, sorry for boring you

Agreed.

Stick with the forum and keep asking for advice and you`ll get there. Am sure someone on the forum will have a decent set of cabs for sale.
DJBJ
Excellent... That I will do then!

Anyone know of the best to buy!???

Sorry for taking over your forum!
RobbieD
I disagree. I believe that hiring is a great, low risk, way of trying out different types of speakers and systems, to decide which suits you best, before spending your hard earned.
jeffwall
ok....be dead honest how much money can you afford for speakers?

dont get crap speakers.....get half decent ones that are usable for perhaps 100/150 guests/people at a funtion

avoid those big red massive efforts made by soundlab or something....try to get a good make, second hand off ebay is fine as long as you listen to them and see them first.

are you going for a powered system or passive system

ie have you a seperate amplifier already?

a second hand pair of mackies for example would be a good start, powered easy to set up, and very good sound....but around 600 quid for a good second hand set....however you will not need a seperate amp...saving you some dosh

or if passive....get a decent amp and look around for decent passive speakers...

couple of datamoons would do you, or for less money, NJD moonflowers (for your lighting)

get the dosh in and start to invest in your equipment and music
DJBJ
Right... Seeing those figures I definitely need to hire for my first few months!
dj007
as Jeff stated above.
are you going to go for active speakers (amplifier built into each speaker) or passive speakers (requires a separate amp)

yes actives are more expensive in the outlay but in the long run it means less to carry and you dont need a separate amp.
i use FBTmaxx actives and they have a 400w rms amp built into each speaker. the price range new is from £1,100 the pair.
ive been told the alto active speakers are quite good and a lot cheaper than mine.

the question is active or passive..... its upto you.
DJBJ
Definately active... Less hassle!

So expensive! sad.gif
Partyprint
You can get my speakers new for around £600, I know there not the best of makes but to start off they might be ideal, there Carslboro gamma 400, there active 400 watt a side an to be honest they dont sound too bad, the only 2 things i'd say about active speakers is that they're heavy, and the amp is built into a cabinet with a bass pin that likes to rattle things so can cause things to come loose. just my opinion am going for passive speaker next time a nice set of adlibs!!!

my FBTMaxx 400w are only 16kg each and are some of the lightest speakers that you can get. mine are almost 3 years old and no rattles yet tongue.gif
