Hello

Well, I guess the question has been asked on many occasions, however, could your guys/girls give me some advice on budget P.A speakers for school usage?

First of all, they need to be sturdy and be able to withstand decent usage. The speakers need to weigh a reasonable amount, but not so much that the would be difficult to mount on speaker stand poles. They would need to have an average power (per speaker) of no lower than 300w, this allows for alternative use, such as school discos etc.

Now, it would be nice to know that your local shop sells a great set up, however, it needs to be mail order or very local to South East London, inc' the big shops (Turnkey Etc) in Central London.

So that's about it, my first thoughts were along the lines of JBL EON's, which are fairly tuff, if rather bland in sound and bass. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...more so because the school keeps asking to use my gear (arms twisted with school selection etc lol) and after a bad experience last year (amp failure then a £100+ bill) I'd rather they get their own set up.

Amps (if non-powered speakers), mixer(s) etc are easier to source and work out, so I just need advice on the best speaker set up under, say £750?

Thanks in advance

Splosh has a school selling there PA and you have a school wanting to buy PA

maybe these schools should talk...

or would that be too sensible?

Seldom would a school consider buying secondhand goods, unless they are covered by a decent warranty. The question is, why is the original school selling their P.A in the first place?

I think 'new' kit is the only viable option for most schools. But thanks for the nod.

Although I generally prefer passive set ups, I would go for a pair of active speakers for this.

Simpler to use, and more flexible. Something that you could just plug a mic, or CD/mp3 player directly in to, or connected directly to the output of a mixer. Also built in protection on most active speakers makes them more difficult to damage through overpowering, etc.

Because of Health and safety issues, Schools should buy new kit.

If they buy secondhand it would need to be fully serviced ( proper service) and checked for safety.

Suggestion:

300 watt bass 15"

150 per channel tops *2 plus horns

Built in Amplifier / crossover /limiter

all on wheels

Simple to use, plus in anything from an IPOD to a CD player

£475.00 inc VAT NEW

PM me for full details ( only one left at this price)

MY suggestion would be to get a pair of the powered The Box PA302As from Thomann. at £167 each they won't break the bank. They are 400 watts RMS 12" bi-amped speakers with a 2 channel eq on the back. £335 for the pair with a three year warranty.

Thanks for all the replies, the basis of the enquiry is to really get 'user' feedback on decent speakers (set-up's) at the requested budget level. As we're ALL fully aware? We all now can surf the web for the best deals (hence the closure of many Disco equipment shops - RIP, Discoland - Lewisham).

What I'm looking for are personal reviews and equipment names, basically, I don't really need a third party to purchase the gear through - does anybody really use this method of buying still? I would deal direct with the company that build the speakers, or one of their approved dealers.

So, any good reviews and model names would be a great help.

Regards
Graham

PS// The school has requested only new speakers with a warranty.

Hi MM

I got your telephone call, many thanks. I've tried to explain the situation regarding the requested equipment needed below, in the thread. The school only require brand new speakers etc, if you've got any good mail order suppliers with good brand name equipment on offer? Please feel free to PM me with details.

Thanks once again for taking the time to call me.

Regards
Graham

I have had the Thomann PA302As I mentioned in the post above and they are very good, and very powerful. Will be more than suitable for your requirements, are very reasonably priced and come with a three year warranty and 30 day money back trial period, seems a no brainer to me.

Try these Db Technologie The opera range would be best suited to you I think.. Good price and good sound... Hope that helps

I use a Kam powered bass cab 600watts, 'Sub 15a', I then have two satellite speakers 200 watts RMS Each. These have never let me down so far, and would make an ideal set up as on wheels. I always use the Birmingham Disco Centre in Erdington, they do mail order, and the guy who owns the place is very experienced in this field. I paid £650 about 12 months ago, and that included speaker covers, poles, and a 24 month warranty! Well worth a call, you can contact the Birmingham Disco Centre on 0121 382 7474

Why not pop into a soundcontrol store? They've a wide range, which is obviously all brand new, they offer package deals so would definitely be able to sort you out.

Hi i go to school and have just recently picked out there speakers and have chosen the Behringer Eurolive B1520 and they sound great with a bit of tweaking from the sound engineer.

I think this system would be more than Ideal for what your looking for :

1000w PA system package 15" speakers.

Complete PA system package with PA powered mixer amplifier, 15" PA speakers, PA speaker stands and PA speaker cables.

A complete PA system package for duos, trios, bands, mobile DJ, karaoke, small school halls and churches, with powered mixer amp, PA speakers, speaker stands and speaker cables.
The mixer amp will power upto 2 x 500watts.

Peavey Extended Warranty Registration Card Included FREE 10 YEARS

I use the Peavey Pro-15's, I have used them to do school halls, wedding receptions, you name it!!

The Phonic Desk is great. I advised my friend who does Caberets as a solo singer to buy this.

The desk has got enough inputs for many Microphones if the school were using it for a school play. And it has the option of plugging CD players into it and not needing another mixer.

This phonic mixer comes with a lid that slots on top of it and does up with butterfly catches so will withstand any usage. And best thing the warranty that the school want is with this package, except you get 10years with this system. The poles and cables are all included.
With this mixer there are special effects for any channel such as reverb etc. It has its own special effects unit built into it.

PRICE £609.00 or £20.72 per month with stagebeat (www.stagebeat.co.uk)

You could get cheaper systems out there, but this one I seriously know would last so much longer as I've had my Peavey Pro-15s for about 5 years now and have never had a problem with them.

There are smaller packages on there that are less in price with the Pro-12's, but I think this system would be best, fool proof so whoever will be using the equipment doesnt need to have much knowledge about PA equipment, and there is the head room for Discos as well.

I hope this helps, and I hope you let us all know what system you go for in the end.

Cheers
