Hi all

I hope this message finds you well.

Curently I run off he following

Amp - Numark Demnsion 3 1200watts
2 x Idex Speakers 300 watts each
2 x Idex Speakers 200 watts each

The local disco shop I use think that the amp is good enough for most normal venues and in fact on of the blokes used to dj with only 800amps.

So my dilema is I want to increase my power, however they have suggested that I lose the 2x200 watt speakers and buy two NJD base pins at 300 watts each, which they say would imprve the sound tremendously and that I would not need much else.

What do others think? Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Your Amplifier is delivering at its max ( paper ) output :

------------------------------------------------------------------
Outputs Speaker Connections binding post & speakon
Power Output RMS (8 Ohms) 300w + 300w
Power Output RMS (4 Ohms) 465w + 465w
-----------------------------------------------------------------

So what does this mean? well you have 500 watts of speaker power, and when both speakers are connected to the amplifier, your amplifier is delivering 465 watt per channel.

If you loose the 200 speakers, the Amp will deliver 300 watts per channel into 1 pair of 8 ohms.

In order to increase your power and quality you need to add 2 bass / sub speakers. I personally think you need to Buy another amplifier to drive the Subs or buy powered Subs.

The power distribution in a speaker system is such that most of your power is required in the Bass. Whilst a Sub with the existing amplifier may improve the sound, you will not be increasing the power output.

Whats your budget?

Try and plan where you want to be in regard to the system at the end of the upgrade. If you can't do it in one purchase, plan or have somebody do it for you, the steps to get that system and in which order things should be bought:

Suggestion.

Ultimate system for you could be:

2 tops ( existing?)

2 Sub

2 Amps ( Numark plus another)

1 Active Crossover

1 Flight case for amps

---------

Step 1

loose Idex 200W and replace with Subs (500 watt)

System is : Numark Amp / Idex Tops / Subs

TOTAL POWER 475 per Channel

----------

Step 2

Add 2nd Amp

System is : Numark Amp / 2nd Amp (500 to 1000 watt amp) / Idex Tops / Subs

TOTAL POWER 975 per channel

----------

Step 3

Add Active crossover / Flight Case

System is : Numark Amp / 2nd Amp / Idex Tops / Subs / active crossover / Flight case

---------

In each of these steps your system will improve and its now in lumps of money that you can budget for.

Great advice Halfpint and all pretty much makes sense . So what Amp/Speakers/Cross Over would people suggest and what sort of overall outlay would you anticipate.

The biggest thing I didn't want too do is to buy a whole new set up when I have a reasonably sounding one at the mo and just need to increase the output

I know its the biggest thing you dont want to do but why not go visit halfpint and listen to some of his whole new systems...

you may find that you can get even better sound for your money rather than mix and match bits of kit from all different places....

however his advice is sound. get your seld some subs and take the work load off the top end...

If you're running at set of 300W and a set of 200W speakers together on the same amp then surely you're either overdriving the 200W ones or under running the 300W ones since they'll be getting the same power! At least a set of bins to go with the 300w tops will share the load a bit better thanks to the bins crossover. Go for it.
