Lots of people on here say they do not like R 'n' B - the newer sense of the term.

Definition:

Rhythm and blues (also known as R&B or RnB) is a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences, first performed by African American artists.

Today the acronym R&B is almost always used instead of the full rhythm and blues, and mainstream use of the term refers to a modern version of soul and funk-influenced pop music that originated as disco became less favorable.

Examples (from The Best Of R&B CD):

Disc: 1
1. Kelis - Milkshake
2. Beenie Man feat. Ms. Thing - Dude
3. Blu Cantrell feat. Sean Paul - Breathe
4. Jamelia - Thank You

Apart from U know what's up & Shackles, I haven't played any of the above this year, and not had any of them requested.
Does that make me a bad DJ, or one that has a whole load more tracks that will be better received at the moment?

typical scenario at one of my bookings

punter : play some RnB
me : who do you want?
punter : you know, some RnB
me : like what?
punter : well anything, long as its RnB
me(to punters face) :okay then
me (in my head) : go away wally

Yes - it seems that in many peoples' minds 'RnB' seems to encompass just about anything in the charts apart from, possibly, out-and-out club material or blatant pop.

I've got a gig coming up (WooHoo!!) where RnB was requested. When I asked the guy to name some typical tracks he'd like me to play, Fedde Le Grand's 'Hands Up' was mentioned...
Make of that what you can. rolleyes.gif

To my mind, the modern idea of RnB, with teenagers at least, seems to be what I'd know as 'Urban', although admittedly my musical knowledge falls far short of what it should be, given my disco leanings.

I've only played Beyonce - Crazy in love this year (twice max). I've heard of Bootylicious (not played it) but in all honestly I've never heard of the rest of them, not one.

I'm busier this year than I've ever been, playing 80's, 90's, disco, funky with a few up to date chart tunes such as Scissor sisters, Gwen Stefani etc. thrown in for good measure.

I work in pubs, don't do many weddings or party type gigs. When I start the night off I introduce myself say I'm more than happy to play requests apart from r n b and hip hop! If people ask for those genres I say "sorry but I don't play that type of stuff" END OF STORY.

I've done every Saturday and every other Friday too date this year.

I don't know the genres, I don't understand them and if I'm being honest I don't want too, I play what I KNOW but not always what I like.

What is getting most requests at the moment................................... Jacksons ABC and wait for it.....................JOHNNY CASH! IPB Image

most of it doesnt inspire you to get up and dance........therefore background music only for me.....the dancey stuff wont include many if any RnB for me anyway

But do like some of it.....(ish) lol

Well I'm not sure how some can get away with just disregarding a fairly popular genre to be honest. I'm sure If i posted saying when people ask me for "disco" or "soul" then i just don't/refuse to play it then I'd get criticsed.

The wedding I did on Saturday was a mainly younger (late 20s) crowd and I played about 6-8 RnB tracks ranging from JT and Pussycat Dolls to older stuff like Ini Kamoze, and of course it was all well received.

I find even if you're doing a 40th or something then you'll get people ask for RnB. Maybe its people definitions of genres again though, as Gwen Stefani was mentioned, and her newer stuff like Sweet Escape, Hollaback Girl etc. is all RnB in my mind.

Johnny Cash is undergoing a bit of a reprieve not only because of the film but also because a lot of football clubs are using it for teams to come out to or when they score a goal.

As for the main topic, R'n'B is one of those genre's with dozens of sub genre's and therein is where the confusion lies. The CD mentioned contains artists that I would class as soul, hip-hop and gangsta-rap. And what would you class Blue as??? Pure pop in my book.

If asked for R'n'B I'll play, what I would call, the cheesey variety. Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce do a lot of cheesey/popular R'n'B whereas artists like Raghav and Beenie Man don't. Other artists have hits with the odd cheesey style song - Nellys Hot in Here springs to mind.

I agree with asking a requestor to expland on their general, all-encompassing request to find the style of R'n'B they are wanting.

I played most of those tunes at a 30th birthday party on saturday.

the request was R&b and house music.

Strange night everyone danced to the house sets, the R&B they just stood on the dance floor chatting. But if I didnt play any R&B for half an hour everyone was requesting it.

If you have to play that toon by Rihanna - Umbrella (yuuuuk ) Try the Haji remix...... much better.

good night in the end. and 2 hours overtime so earnt an extra £100 ....cant be bad

R&B = Rubbish & that word that caused all the fuss on the Sex Pistols Album (in other words the sort of stuff mentioned in post 1)
R'n'B = Anything from Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner & the Paramounts to such as early Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, the Animals, early Who etc

Well it's how I differentiate with my genre tags anyway

Bit like the old "Hey Mr DJ, give us summut I can dance too?"

Are you sure it was "Wally" you thought in your head LOL tongue.gif

Oh yea, and R'n'B has allways been a genre thats confused me, its just so diverse and covers so much different stuff, still not really sure exactly what makes a track an R'n'B track.......all down to the individual I think.
