Hi People
As the title sugests Im in need of some help with a playlist for this evening.
Its a surprise party for two people to thank them for running the London Marathon in aid of Breast Cancer.
The organiser wants general party music, but also wants plenty of soul music thrown in.
Can anyone suggest some Artists and tracks to get me started, as I dont know a lot about this type of music and what will go down well and what wont.
Cheers
Nick

There's your answer.

Treat it as a normal disco - there will be a mix of ages there anyhow, so go for it and enjoy the event.
As for the 'soul' request, I've found that peoples' perception of soul can differ quite wildly, so it might be worthwhile clarifying this with the client - we can't really guess at what they might mean.
Not all that helpful, I know, but that's what I'd do.

agree with what Andy is saying. I'd play the usual party stuff plus the known/popular soul/tamala tracks.

Agree about the various types. A lot depends on clients' perception, which is why it's best to check with them.

Yea thats what I thought......soul is a bit general..
So I will probs do a bit of Luther Vandros, James Brown Etc.....see how that goes down.
And other than that just make it up as I go along, I used to try and do playlist prior to the event so I had a starting point, but have found it works much better if I try and "read the crowd" more than I used too.
So general party it is then, give um a bit of everything and see what works best, and if it seems to be working give um some more in the same kinda genre......
Anymore sugestions for artists along the lines of Luther Vandros and James Brown please?

Soul I would play stuff like:
Jocelyn Brown - Somebody Elses Guy

Motown wise just the usual
Four Tops - I can't help myself
Foundations - Build Me Up
Supremes - You can't hurry love
Stevie Wonder - Superstition

Just take requests and find out what they want.

Just shows how we all differ! I would be playing some Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, James Brown and Marvin Gaye. I'd move from these to Blues Brothers and Commitments too.

Agree (I did a couple of sets last week that included all the above (& some of Norfolk DJs too) - went down a treat)

Yes Paul, one of the best things about this site is sharing ideas with one another, particuarly music tracks. Even the most experienced of pros tend to forget certain tracks which remain popular. I have reintroduced some tracks which i had forgotten about

Just to let you know guys.....
I had a brilliant night, although the pub was booked for a party, it wasnt private so a number of non-party people thier.
Played a little bit of everything trying to keep everyone happy. Bit random at times with all the requests coming in but I like it like that sometimes, and it seems the punters liked it too.
Soul, Motown, 70's, 80's, 90's right up to todays latest dance music....was a really wild night and I loved everyminute of it.
Got a booking for another party in June.......and the landlord took a card for future reference and gave me a £20 tip......so all in all a very good night.
Cheers guys for the tune suggestions, I did use some of them and it worked out really well.
And thanks Gavin for passing that my way, turned out really well in the end.
