The 40gb internal hard drive appears a bit on the low side.

Rather than cart an internal one around, does anyone (Gary) know whether these can be upgraded internally or whether Denon are planning to increase the size of the drive in the near future?

I believe you can put a bigger HD in, but it voids the warranty

Perhaps better waiting for 12 months before swapping HD?

Hi Guys,

I spoke to Denon about this a few days ago and unlkike some of the competetors, denon offers support for 4 additional mass storage devices of ANY size.

So therefore the internal HDD is really for the everyday party tracks you would use.

You would use an additional, larger, drive say, 300GB to store the newest tracks, for example.

Being the only one of the new ground-breaking hard drive controllers which offers an internal hard drive as well as external USB support, the DN-HD2500 is of course the only unit to have the question of swapping the internal hard drive.

As correctly stated above, swapping the internal hard drive with any other make, model, capacity etc during the warranty period, will void the warranty. (unless you swap it with another 40gb Denon DN-HD2500 hard drive of course)

However, before anyone starts pointing a screwdriver at the user removable hard drive sled on the left hand side of the unit, lets have a quick reminder of what you can actually fit on a 40gb hard drive, in music terms. - Sure 40gb is small in a PC environment, but the whole idea of the 2500 is to leave the PC behind, snug in its safety zone at home.

40GBs gives you room for:

13000 MP3 tracks @ 128kbps

or

8700 MP3 tracks @ 192kbps

or

5250 MP3 tracks @ 320kbps

or

A very respectable 1200 uncompressed WAV files (with Tags) at full CD quality.

Thinking of excternal drives for a moment, of which the DN-HD2500 can address 4 drives of up to 50,000 tracks per drive (200,000 tracks in total + the tracks on the internal drive too!), here's what you could store on a fairly humble 400gb external drive:

50,000 MP3s at 320kbps

or

12,000 WAV files in uncompressed CD quality.

Ok Gary. But are they planning to increase to capacity to avoid the need to take exteranl drives along with you?

Surley you would want to take an exturnal HD for back up...

And yes leave the PC snug at home for when the PC dependant HDC needs it again to sort out the library lol

Gary close your eyes and ears for this post...

There are a couple of Denon HD2500 in the south of england that can handle 2400 wav file at Full CD quality (approx 80Gb) without the need for external hard drives

No larger internal hard drives for the DN-HD2500 in the pipeline to my knowledge - 2.5 inch drives (which is what the DN-HD2500 uses as they are better suited for internal mobile device usage) are quite pricey, and aren't falling in price as much as desktop 3.5inch drives.

External for backup? sure.... its optional of course, but as we all know, backup of any key item is always a good idea - one thing to note is that the DN-HD2500 will still run perfectly using external drives even if the internal drive reaches the end of its life (as all drives do). The operating system and software application isnt on the internal drive. and yes, thankfully the DN-HD2500 doesnt rely on Windows sharing the stage with it at gigs - adding new files from time to time can be done at home etc, during audience-free, non-critical moments.

looking around ebay although the laptop sized hdd (2.5") are certainly higher priced than the more conventional PC style, the difference in price is often less than a tenner for the same capacity given that Denon must be bulk buying them i suppose that the price difference to them would be minimal. personally i think that its penny pinching to fit such a small capacity hard drive into such an expensive product, as even cheap PC's come with better hdd capacity as standard. So how much would offering the unit with 80gb or 120gb cost in real terms at factory level? $20? $15? or is there any other reason for fitting a 40gb other than cost?.

I dont...

larger hard discs are available in many places... just remember that your warranty is not valid of you change the internal disc...

So let me make sure I understand this correctly biggrin.gif

A PC or laptop never ever needs a DN - HD2500 to operate as a DJ Playin device...

But a DN-HD2500 does need a laptop or a PC to be able to function at some point in its existence...

I have got that bit right havent I Gary... 533.gif
