One of the best ways to "kill" a dancefloor, is a dramtic change between tempo, or in some cases, the style of the music.
OK, no-one in their right minds would play: Wonderul tonight, followed by Black box, ride on time, then into "Lady in Red", but you get the idea that a good flow keeps 'em dancing.
So...how about sharing a few "joiner" tracks...Shall I be mother?
From a "slow spot" to a faster spot:
Jennifer Warnes & Bill (made up name) Medley: I've had the time of my life.
This seems to work well, since the beginning is slow/spoken, and then 30 odd seconds later, breaks into a dancable rhythm.
From Mid-paced to slow:
Olivia Newtron bomb & John Revolta(?) Summer nights:
All dancable beat is lost in the last 30 seconds+ of this tune, and its a song of love, or bonking under a pier, depending on whether you're listening to Sandy's or Danny's side of the story. So, an obvious lead in to the a slow spot.
From Modern to 60's (or vice versa)
Either of the recent(ish) Elvis remix tunes: Either Rubberneckin' or Little Less conversation. Since both are tunes which oldies, and youngies will recognise.
and, I'm sure theres many more....

I agree that a drastic change in tempo can empty a dance floor. For smaller dancefloors there will always be a time when it is only the harden few that stay dancing. With 16/18th girls birthdays there is always the 'sheep' element, you know 1 goes to the loo, then everyone is packed into the smallest room!!
During this hot weather at a small wedding reception I did slow things down quickly from time to time just to stop some of the champagne fuelled older gentlemen passing out!
Quite often kill tempo on Pioneer players using the zip functon, also have heard djs on 1210`s turning off the power and keeping the volume up and starting the next track when the first one hits the compatable tone!(takes a bucket load of practice)
I use Billy Ocean-Love Really Hiurts to get into some Motown. Try this one as well, You're in an 80's spot and you want to get to DJ Sammy sort of era. I played Black Box-Ride On Time into Culture Beat- Mr Vain and then followed it with JX- Theres Nothing I Won't Do and then straight into "Heaven" there you go 80's into 2003. Another one that works well is The Mavericks-Dancing The Night Away and then follow it with Dire Straits-The Walk Of Life and from here you could go into Wham- Wake Me Up or Phil Collins- Two Hearts or Queen- A Crazy Little Thing Called Love and then depending how you're doing you could play Grease- Megamix and onto some party tunes. The options are endless.

I tried the Mavericks into Dire Straits on Friday night (as suggested by Loz) - dance floor cleared after the Mavs and then filled with 'fresh blood' for Dire Straits so a result of sorts. Walk of Life starts quite quietly so I cut the first 10 secs.
On to the 'new' Elvis song I think it still sounds dated - the best one for me is 'Burning Love'

In the Club I DJ. I sometimes will drop a tune that I know people will not dance to as much. The reason I do this is when I notice tht the bars are quiet and people are not drinking. I drop in a tune and people will usually go straight to the bar. It keeps my boss happy anyway as he is earning money when they are drinking.

I'd get yelled at if I did that. Not happy unless he has a capacity dancefloor.

Our boss is only happy if people are spending money. Get them to the bar, then they are usually so drunk I can play anything and they will be happy. That also means less requests and annoying punters as the DJ booth is on a stage. They have to negotiate stairs to speak to me.
Get them legless - have a peaceful night!!

The only trouble in doing this near the end of the night is that they are so drunk they stay on the dance floor no matter what you play.
