Plenty of talk on here recently about alternative tracks to try out.

It reminded me of functions where guests include some from overseas, and music tastes and the charts differ even in Europe and the USA. Sometimes the B&G will make you aware of this but not always. In Norfolk and Suffolk we have a large number of Americans living here because of the US airforce bases.

It reminds me of a wedding I did in Norwich in 1986. It was booked through an agency and I didn't have any contact details prior to the event. The groom was American and about half of the guests were as well, and the usual chart stuff of that time received a luke warm response. I was really unable to get the event going, but the previous evening, I had watched 'Entertainment USA' on BBC2 where Stevie Winwood and 'Higher Love' was at Number 1 in the states, but here was only a top 20 hit. I played the track (as in those days I stocked the top 20) and instantly the dance floor was full for that track and for the rest of the evening. I great gig was enjoyed!

A large proportion of my weddings have guests from Scotland, England & Wales which could loosely be classified as 'International' (for me smile.gif ).

Equally someone doing a function in the south of England with guests from the north would benefit from a bit of local knowledge.

I sometimes do this by PM - last nights surprise birthday party was for a Liverpool fan so I contacted Ian Stewart (or was it Steve Mitchell rolleyes.gif ) who gave me the low down and it made a big difference - thanks Stevie thumbup.gif

I'm still waiting to do a function with guests from Norway though smile.gif

You are right Paul. Differences in music taste is apparent in other parts of the country. In the old days, these were more obvious eg White Lines in 1984 sold very heavily in thw North West.

I would be interested to know how typical function music differs in Norway compared to the UK, can you give some general examples?

Rob.

I thought it was a megamix comprising the Tweenies and Teletubbies!

I do mostly club work but do some mobile work. What do you mean by typical function music ? Every mobile gig has different guests , age groups etc so i wouldnt call anything typical. Obviously the odd classic crops up but I try to change the set every gig. Thriller, Like a prayer, sing hallelujah,Gonna make you sweat, the power, think, wake me up,twist and shout and raining men are just a few of the tracks that can often be heard at weddings here. Local music also plays a big part as well as a lot of folk music at weddings. Norwegians also like to dance a form of swing\jive so thats often used too.

Just interested to see any variations between a bog standard wedding function in the uk and Norway. Folk music as you say appears at a typical function.
