Well as is inevitable Norway has decided to follow parts of the USA and ban smoking from all pubs, bars ,clubs and restaurants, this becomes law on 1st June 2004 and establishments who dont follow this law can expect huge fines and even a revoked licence. I smoked for 26 years and have managed to give up 2 years ago, i am not anti smoking,i was just wondering if you guys could maybe try and envisage how this will affect our nightlife here,i know that in New York that this law has actually led to an increase of punters: Ideas? huh.gif

No idea how this will pan out. Whilst Smoking has been banned in many Family style pubs and most eateries in the UK (Although some establishments still have smoking "zones") vey few, if any night clubs have banned smoking on their premises, nor do I think they ever will.

As a non smoker (never even tried one) I am in favour of a ban becoming legal, or rather a smoke free zone becoming a LEGAL requirement in EVERY establishment in the UK, whether it's Burger King or local pub or a Night Club.

Whist I respect every smokers right to smoke, I believe that I have an equal right as a non smoker to visit a pub / stand at a bar / work in a venue and not be choking on other peoples fag smoke 221.gif censored.gif .

More of a concern is the number of kids smoking and how young they start. Tonight I noticed a group of kids who omly looked about 10 or 11, smoking happily and openly next to the local co-op. I don't know if you have the same problems in Norway, but its more common for them over here, to start smoking at Primary School age, than it was 5 years ago.

I suppose, ultimately, it depends on the ratio of smokers vs non smokers for your local area to decide what impact the law will have on venues. Given that it is a LAW and there are no exceptions then the punters will have to choose whether they go out and don't smoke or stay at home and smoke smile.gif . It's not like it is just YOUR venue implementing the rule, and risking losing the punters going to a venue which doesn't have a policy!. I guess that if all venues have the same law imposed then you won't see much change.

Not likely!
It's a food hygeine regulation! although I dont know if it is in Norway but in the Uk, many moons ago they brought out the basic food handling certificate for all those in food handling establishments, and beleive it or not, It was the brewery that done it!
I done mine with Courage in 91, and all beverages fell into this category, It was the brewerys that wanted the ban on smoking and thats why you will only see sectioned off areas of a pub/restaurant as they havent been able to implement it fully.

In restaurants I agree, I dont like people smoking over me while I'm eating, and have often gone to the non smoking areas!
In pubs with sectioned off areas if I cant bare the amount of smoke in that certain area then I'd rather not sit there or smoke.
At clubs, Ive still got the burn scars on me arms to prove people shouldnt dance and smoke at the same time, but I do think thay should just ban people from smoking on the dancefloor and not fully,
Loads of workplaces have banned smoking or only have a designated area, and its vile! just one big ashtray, but for those people that are put out into staff areas or on the street for a fag is worse, as a have been manager of a food outlet I thought it looked awful if the customer saw you outside smoking but also the fact that your treated like an outcast, the last place I ever smoked outside was on a loading bay and the fact that it was freezing and there was a rat bigger than me and the fear of been mowed down by a lorry put me off smoking at work alltogther.(plus due to regulations I was supposed to change each time I left the food area)

For those that want to give up smoking is an encoragement, for those that dont will be made to feel like a social outcast! Its a habit its not easy to give up! wallbash.gif

I have just read an article in the Sunday papers that the South of Ireland will introduce a ban on smoking in all pubs/clubs on 1st Jan 2004. The piece goes on to say that venues north of the border have noticed an increase in bookings for next year from people living in the south who don't agree with this ban.

Interesting points and yes Chris we do have the young kids smoking problem, also in Norway as fags are £7 a packet ,rolling tobacco is very much in use amongst men and women. When i smoked i never smoked in my own house because of the other non smoking members of the family, also having wooden houses makes for a nervous fag! Paula the food handling laws are very strict here. The most popular trend here now is wet snuff which you puts under your top lip,it contains an abrasive substance which breaks the skin of the gums and allows the tobacco to flow directly into the blood stream, yuk! biggrin.gif I think personaly that the clubs will go on and the affects might not be as negative as everybody believes they will be.

Hmm I can see whats going to happen at some of the working clubs I play at , dancefloor even emptier , half em outside for a smoke , and me with em ! tongue.gif laugh.gif

I doubt clubs will die. If it is enforced, staff will be continually asking people to put ciggarettes out. Infact on a recent girls 18th birthday party, I did a quick poll. Out of 56 guests, 7 didn't appear to smoke.

When you next do your yearly safety checks and clean of you lighting effects get a white cloth with meths and clean the lenses, just check out the tar like deposits!!! The fan cooled effects are even worse!
