The new Charts mean that anything can get into the top 40, When this first happened i thought that this would be great but since then people ask me for some strange songs and when i check they did get in but very low in the chart.
I know that there has always been the chance that anything can get into the charts as long as enough people buy it on cd/download but now its gone nutts

two words - mothers day!
the top ten album chart is full of mothers favs from yesteryear and last weeks number one is nowhere to be seen this week!
I like the download chart but i think it should be run alongside the old style chart!

The worse part is if people ask for a song and we download it from itunes etc we are adding to the problem

Aren't the charts supposed to show what tracks are selling?
Even before downloads were eligible there were plenty of re-issues & re-entries in the charts, a cursory glance through the Guinness book of British hit singles shows this. It's just a bit more likely now any download is eligible.

Good idea. The week it first started I remember hearing the chart show host trying to get everyone to buy/download Glen Campbell---Rinstone cowboy.

As I understand it in the bad old days a song had to be registered to go into the charts Ie unknow band in Glasgow could sell 100,000 copies of its latest tune and no chart hit Weststrife could sell 50,000 and get no 1..
At least now if you can get your tune on a reputable DL site it is in with a chance...
Hey does this mean you trendy DJs will have to play Cheese like the Nolans now Woo Hoo......

The difference is that most songs will come on on a now/mastermix etc but some of the songs that people ask for have only been released as a single and never gets high enough to get on the now cd's most bands now worry more about singles that albums

No, it's the original - no doubt there as a result of the comic relief version, which is currently at No. 3.

This is great we might get some decent music in the charts from the 70's and 80's instead of the drivel that we are given now... Lets face it the music biz is flat at the moment we need another punk style uprising to push the simon fullers of this world out and give the music back to the artists....

..and having spent last night watching the R & B night on BBC 4, I would suggest John Mayall, Cream, Ginger Baker, Steampacket, McGuiness-Flint. Really made a nice change having the grey matter jogged with songs that I had forgotten.

A local radio DJ has been talking about this subject the other day and he was saying that when they have the you control the music thing there is a lot wider choice these days as people ask for all types of music and he thinks that its down to the fact that its easy to buy music now as before £3.99 was a lot of money for a single that you kind of liked where now 79p is ok.
So he felt that the downloads have made the chart a whole lot more random

Twenty years ago i used to worry about missing stuff that was in the charts and I always had the top 20 tunes. For the average function jock, that is no longer important. Personally, you need a knowledge of what is in the charts and have the most popular ones (few and far between as a rule). The obscure stuff at the bottom end of the chart i don't bother with unless it's a bride & groom favourite.
