I just bought a geni mojo scan 1 off of ebay from a user that sole it as untested and so i cant get a refund because its my fault for being stupid and buying it without it gaurunteeing to work...

anyway, when i turn it on it imediatly blows the fuse with every fuse i have tried. i am using the correct fuse by the way.

Also when i did manage to get it to stay on a load of smoke started to come out of the unit after a few seconds... obviously i turned it straight off

I havent got a clue what could be wrong with it and ide just like to know whats best for me to do... should i take it to my local S&L shop to get it looked at or is there just a simple answer to this which ive over looked?

Thanks
Chrispy
Hi,

I'm 99% certain that this is a fault with the actual mains transformer within the unit, however first check that the unit is fitted with the correct lamp. I know that this is the most obvious (and logical) test but you would be surprised at how many returns we see, where the lamp has been substituted with a higher rating!. Especially where the unit has been bought second hand, and the seller has just fitted "Whatever he had lying around". The correct lamp for the Mojoscan is 24V 250W.

I'm sure that you have already checked the lamp at some stage, so unfortunately I think you may be looking at a replacement mains transformer, which can be expensive, certainly a fuse blowing does indicate a short circuit winding within the transformer and the existing unit would not be repairable.

There is one thing that you can check however. If the unit has had a fan failure or overheated at some point, then it is possible that the internal wiring has been damaged by heat from the lamp. By removing the cover, you can check to see if any wiring has melted together and "Welded" by the heat! - In most cases this would usually be the wiring between the mains transformer and actual lamp holder.

If the wiring is okay then you really need to seek the opinion of an engineer for repairs. Unfortunately, Geni spares in the UK are somewhat limited due to their restricted distribution network. However it is likely that a transformer from another similar effect - such as an Abstract, NJD etc may fit and be an easy to obtain replacement should you encounter difficulties with the original part.

We do offer repairs on these units, however due to the addition cost of carriage, you may find it cheaper to have it repaired locally. If I can be of any further assistance please email me at tech@dj-supplies.co.uk

Well i have just checked the lamp and it is indeed an osram 24v 250w bulb as its stamped on the side.

I will open it up and check for any burns to the wires or anything but im pretty sure the fan was working when i managed to get it to stay on for a bit... sounded pretty noisy too lol... but it might not have been the fan making the noise cause the motors were doing there warmup thing.

honestly tho... the smoke that came out earlier smells so disgusting... ive got the unit open infront of me here and it smells so disgusting lol... i can see something that doesnt looks so nice inside... not sure exactly what it is... ill open it and have a look... then get back to you smile.gif ... if it was a fault with the trasformer then what would the smoke have been from? something was burning lol

ok right well i have just opened it all up and had a look at the circuits and wires and stuff and as far as i can see there are no burns or anything that looks dodgy except for 1 think which looks kinda like its burnt but i actually cant get to it without unscrewing the whole inside and even then i dont know if i can.

ive just looked in my mojo spinmaster 3 and it has a similar looking thing but the one in the spinmaster isnt all brown and horrible looking lol...

i would be willing to send the unit to you for repairs as i dont know how good the shop actually is and i know they drasticly over charge so it may actually be cheaper to send it to you. The same lamp that you sell for £2.35, they sell for £17 ... so i dont even want to consider how much they will over charge for repairs...

i have sent these two posts to your e-mail by the way just incase you dont read them.

Hi,

Got your email and read your posts. Firstly the "Horrible looking thing" blink.gif is likely to be the *burned out* transformer. They are quite easy to spot, just look for the biggest heaviest thing inside the unit!. It has probably already partly burned out, more than likely by the previous owner mad.gif

In my experiances with repairs - Usually when fuses blow continuously the first thing a D.J does is to either wrap foil around the fuse ohmy.gif or replace it with something higher!!. NEVER be tempted to do this - if a fuse blows it is for a reason and usually indicates a short circuit or a major fault and bypassing it can be a fire hazard!.

I think that the previous owner has replaced the fuse with a higher rating (or foil) and the transformer has been forced to run into an overload which creates heat and starts to smoke sad.gif . The acrid smell that comes off is due to the burning of the wax paper and enamel that is used inside the transformer - eventually all of the insulation will burn away and the copper windings will fuse together and you are likely to blow the plug fuse or trip out the entire mains!.

We have quite a fair policy on mail order repairs. You would need to get the faulty item to us (usually carrier or parcel force) and we would diagnose the problem, and offer a quotation for repair FREE OF CHARGE. Only if you decide to go ahead with the repair would any fee be charged smile.gif .

Of course the return carriage (usually £8 for 48 hr delivery) to get the item back to you would be chargeable in addition to the repair fee, obviously this would also be charged if you wanted the item sending back without being repaired.

would thye transformer happen to be a big coily looking metal thing under the lamp?

cause if it is then thats the nasty looking brown thing lol
Chrispy
The Big Coily thing under the bright hot lamp thing is indeed the Transformer tongue.gif

And if it smells and has gone all brown and burned looking then it needs replacing!
