Hi, I asked for some advice a couple of day ago with regard to house tracks. Many thanks for your help as I know have got many of the tracks you suggested ready for a gig.
I now need some more help from you Knowledgeable people!!
I have another gig in the end of October for a dinner/dance and presentation evening. This is for a bowls club so the majority of the guest are elderely and pensioners.
On their booking form they have requested 50's, 60's, Waltz, Ball room and quick steps to dance too.
I am ok with the 50's and 60's tracks need some titles or cd's suggesting for the ball room, waltz, quick steps etc.. plus some sing along old time tracks that they know from their era.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Easy gig mate! There are a few cds around with several different waltzes/quick steps and fox trots on em.. suggest you invest in one as I find that the bowls club brigade like to start off with this sort of dance. I do a couple of bowls clubs and here what I know goes down well (though not in any particular order)
Dance the night away - Mavericks (goes down really well)
Pretty Woman - Roy orbison
Baby Love - Supremes
The Locomotion - Little Eva
The twist - chubby checker
Wake up Little Susie
Runaround Sue
Mony Mony
Doo Wah Diddy
Reet Petite
Im a believer
Rock around the clock
Dancing Queen
The Best
Im in the mood for dancing
Keep to this sort of vein and you will be fine.... Remember though, when doing a gig for older people dont do too many "fast" tracks... they will need a breather after 3 or four.. they also love classics such as lady in red, etc..... I also play several sing along tracks - and remember... they eat slowly! So you probably wont have too much to do! And be prepared for a few surprises.... I lost count the number of times I got asked to play "cant get you outta my head" last year by the old duffers... they also like party stuff like the macaren, hands up, ymca EVEN.... dare I say it.... The birdie song!
Any more advice just ask!

That is the biggest thing... DONT PLAY IT LOUD.... I promise you if you think it is too quiete you have got the volume right.. and if the old buggers buy you a drink you have definitely cracked it! Good luck!

Remember that when playing foxtrots, waltzes etc the people dancing like to stop between records, clap and find another partner. Go and buy a CD or two as these are quite frequently asked for, I always play Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around The Old Oak Tree and some Glenn Miller.

As seen in some of my other quotes, I'm a keen avocat (and lemonade?) of sharing any potential problems with the audience - Within reason...(they wont want to know about the curry session that you had the previous night, nor any of the related details about the two record boxes stacked behind you, holding a bucket to your bum.
Old people (especially) often have this stereotype image of "Disc Jockeys" blinding them with strobes and sending them flying, star shaped onto the back wall of the hall, where they then slide to the floor only once the musics stopped.
BEAT THIS pre-conception.... between the meal and the presentation say something like.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, You'll be pleased to know that I always try to be very careful about not playing the music too loud. With this in mind, after the presentations I'll start with some waltzes (foxtrots, quicksteps whatevers been requested) and I'll play these quietly. If its too quiet, especially for those of you at the back, please let me know - obviously the aim is for e v e r y o n e to enjoy themselves. I'd rather 10 people come and tell me to turn the music up, than even one person ask me to turn the music down...see yuu all after the presentations"
This sounds like a very long speech, but remember its not in-between records, or breaking any dancing atmosphere etc.
This "showing them you care" bit, works absolute wonders AS LONG AS YOU CAN STICK TO IT

. I'm lucky that I have a compressor/limiter on my sound, so on such gigs where the "mary whitehouse" types are there, insisting on levels so low, you can hear the shoes tapping away as people dance, I can set a maximum level that will only be exceeded for a few seconds before being seamlessly adjusted automatically.
Also try to get the presentations to be done DIRECTLY after the coffee and mints have gone out...NOT 20 minutes after you've started the dancing. Theres nothing more annoying than just getting them all up dancing, and some little club secretary chap coming up to you, asking you to stop at the end of the record thats playing, so they can do the presentation/raffle etc.

Old tyme or new, waltz's etc????
The new waltzes etc. try and get hold of. i think, Andy Ross CD's
Old style, Bob Burgess and his Orch. etc. Also so look at Sydney Thompson, Joe Loss etc. Sounds like crap to me, but it works.

Not only that if you go for the Sydney Thompson / Joe Loss type albums they actually have what each track is Quickstep / Polka / American Swing etc and you don't need to know the tempo for any!! Just put a few waltzes together, etc etc and you will be the Dogs doo Dahs!!

old time waltzes, grab a couple of CDs called Old Tyme dancing available in most supermarkets!
or your local HMV etc..look under the strict tempo section!
or try this place
http://www.instep.uk.com/music.htmalso
also for functions with a Scottish or Irish flavour....
Irish- there is always a market stall in most large British cities selling this kind of stuff ask their advice
Scottish- Same as above....
Ie in Manchester try Bury Market, in London Shepards Bush Market

Above all - DON'T try mixing with this sort of music

. With old time, strict tempo music it is usually a must to leave a bit of a gap especially when changing from a barn dance to a quickstep for example - since the old dears usually pause to clap, bow etc to their partners between tracks!.
Mic use is a must, since this age group always need some sort of advance warning of what is coming next, more so, when playing the old time stuff. Just something along the lines of "Ladies and Gentleman, please take your partners for a waltz".
Lighting:- for the old time or big band stuff if the venue has a mirror ball then use it!, failing that, go for some subtle colour changing effects, or simple light box and ropelight. Avoid the use of scanners, strobes and smoke machines.
Also, just because they are old doesn't mean that they won't enjoy themselves!. Play the right music, keep the volume down and the chances are that everybody will enjoy themselves. Another bonus, is that people of this age rarely cause any problems, and the old ladies will usually spoil you when it comes to buffet time

.

chris.. I have to disagree... duffers are often the hardest people to please.. many go with the attitude "what on earth have we got a disco booked for". I hate to say this, but they do have preconceived ideas that all they are going to get is banging music which is not of their taste..... As long as you keep the volume low and take advice from the tunes suggested you will be ok... and above all else, be polite! I have round some duffers to be amongst the rudest guests to entertain... but get it right and they are putty in your hands!

talking of food... I once did a river boat for a group with learning disabilities... their meal was chicken and rice which got spilt all over the boat.. anyway, as most of you know, the set up on boats is at best, rank, and halfway through the gig, the stylus popped out on one of the turntables... I had to feel my way through half a ton of spat out rice to find the blooming thing... which also looked like a grain of rice... eeeeyuuukkkk!

Hi There
Anyone know of the style of music called Cirroc (See I cant even spell the bl**dy thing....!)
Have just been asked for it for a 60th Birthday and so far all she said was it's like what Kylie sings...
That narrows it down!!!
Many thanks for any help!!!

I think they were probably referring to Ceroc music which is a latin style similar to salsa mixed with jive. No similarities to Kylie though

Apart from the BBC TV theme to The Cricket, the only cricket song that I can think of was a parody of Paul Hardcastles: Nineteen.
The Parody was called "N,n,n,n,nineteen, Not out" by Rory Bremner.

The BBC theme to the Cricket is of course "Soul Limbo" By Booker T and The Mgs(of Green Onions fame amongst others!)

Be warned...watch out for broken drinks glasses when playing this theme...people just seem to naturally pick up a spoon, or a pen, or a set of keys and start joining in with the tune, using their glass.
Tink tink tink tinktink tinky tinky TWISH!!!!

Sorry if I am a bit late with this Tonsk but its what I play four nights a week. Its a form of Rock n roll/Jive.You can almost get away with anything up to date that has a steady beat(116/124 bpm).
Here are one or two popular Ceroc tracks that you cant go wrong with:
WILL YOUNG - I WONT DANCE
VAN MORRISON - BABY YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES
ENRIQUE DOUBLEGLAZING - HERO(MAXIMIX)
STEPS - CHAIN REACTION
BOYZONE - WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
VAN MORRISON - PRECIOUS TIME
SANTANA - SMOOTH
TRACTORS - BABY LIKES TO ROCK IT
ONE TRUE VOICE - SACRED TRUST
JANET JACKSON - WHOOPS NOW
MAVERICKS - DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR - TAKE ME HOME
BOBBY DARIN- MACK THE KNIFE
PEGGY LEE - FEVER
Plus most of the modern upbeat cheesy pop stuff. One thing you will get from a crowd that like Ceroc (Modern jive/swing/lindy) is a busy floor
Have a good one

Well, tonight is the night we entertain these oaps. Managed to get lots of waltz, quicksteps, tango etc. That should keep them whirling around the dance floor under my giant 1metre balls (mirror balls).
Going to only take one set of rcf events as dont want to deafen them. Hopefully they have some nice grub to tuck into. I always play much better when fed and watered.
