Right, the laptop has arrived, and i'm about to order my download of OTSDJ (Arghhhhhhhhhh which copy do I go for???).

The laptop has a copy of XP installed (That can go for a start!), is there anything else that I need to do, in order to make sure that it runs ok from a fresh O/S install.

Next - how do I transfer my CD Collection onto the laptop?.

Anybody fancy posting a Ye Olde Idiots guide to this?? wallbash.gif

Isnt this in the realms of "walks in the other direction ... whistling innocently to self"? scared.gif

Or, is the answer... insert the CD into the CD-Rom Drive and choosing the appropriate track to play to the audience? 095.gif

I have phoned and emailed the relevant organisation about keeping a "Backup" copy of all of my tunes, but have not yet had the courtesy of a reply. wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif

Chris,

The following 2 links will answer many questions as to which software to use to convert tracks from the cd to mp3 and how to go about it.

OtsDJ uses it's own format, you can use mp3 (whatever they are rolleyes.gif )but it is far better to use Ots files.

Did you get your PM about it Chris ?

Thanks for the software links Esk and for the long and detailed P.M ADS!.

I can see lots of Evenings in by the Fire, playing about with this

On another note, with so many people advising me just to use the laptop solely for running Windows / OTS. Is it better to conver the files on the main pc and transfer them in bulk to the laptop via the network, or to install the actual conversion software on the laptop and convert them from its own CD-ROM??>

If you have the option to convert the cd's to mp3 on a seperate machine then I would recomment that you do that, thus keeping the laptop as 'pure' as possible. One of the main causes of pc's/laptops crashing is driver conflicts. The less software on there the less chance of drivers conflicting.
I personally convert all tracks on my home pc, and then burn them onto a CD-RW and then paste from the CD-RW onto my DJ-PC (This contains only the OS and BPM Studio and no other software whatsoever, not even a modem).

To convert my cd`s to mp3 I use ` easy mp3 ` . Connect to the internet , then put your cd in. Using CDDB it works out the track list for your albumn/single. You can then pick a compression ie 192k or 128k then encode the whole albumn, it will label all the mp3s for you. Best done on a main machine as I don`t like the thought of connecting the laptop to the net.

Hope this is of some help

Im sticking with Audio CD's and some MP3 CD's on hardware CD-decks for the moment.

I've yet to find all the features that I use, on any of the main DJ software applications, and Im none too happy at the single point of failure on software DJ'ing. EG: The laptop worketh - or the laptop worketh not....

Is there an IT consultant in the house? fear.gif Anyone got an anti-static wrist-strap? scared.gif

Don't forget to save a back up of all your ots files on a different computer, or separate harddrive Chris. Advisable to buy two identical hard drives, ie 2 x 120gb and 2 caddies to put them into, so if your laptop crashes it (hopefully) doesn't touch your music files, if it does you have another identical set at home.
